To buy or not to buy...

Hey everyone,

I haven't bought a Tacoma yet. Im waiting to pay off some credit cards first. Ideally I would be buying sometime around March. I will have a lot of stuff paid off by then.

I've been very excited about the Tacoma for a while. I was selling Toyotas when the 2nd Gen showed up (not selling anymore)

So I guess my excitement just hit a wall . Tacoma redesign expected for 2013.

I know there has been a lot of rumors about the redesign for a while, but this was the first source that seemed credible. With other stories saying a hybrid would be available in 2012, I was excited because that suggested to me that Toyota wouldnt intoduce the hybrid in a Tacoma and then redesign the body style the following year. Doesnt make good business sense in any way to me. Besides the 1st gen Tacos were around from 95-04 with changes to the lights and facia. I would still expect the 2nd gen to be around until 2014-2015. I dont know what to believe right now and guess nothing is official until it comes from Toyota...

I want a Tacoma for practicality of having one. 4 wheel drive in the snow, camping, house projects. Plus I hate calling others when I need a truck. The 2nd Gen Taco is the best looking truck out there. It does what I want and then some.

My plans for my Taco

If it were to happen in the next year, my Tacoma would be
Brand new- a Super White Double Cab Longbed with the TRD Sport package
Planned Mods: TRD Supercharger, Toytec Ultimate lift kit, 18x9 Monster rims, (tire ideas are changing but looking for agressive looking mud tire probably around 285/60/18...Nitto Grapplers), Beefed Tacos sliders (likely some type of custom bumper protection in back and a similar lightbar kinda like the avid light bar...but with Beefed Taco's custom design if he is up to it). I like the look of the Hella Rallye 4000i lights, but crap they are $$$$. I will go with the White with black trim, with a little bit of red theme on the truck (like a toyota devil emblem painted white, but red horns...like my truck just gored someone), black headlight mod, tinted tails, blacked out decals with some red in it (like a red V6 emblem). Plans for a soft tonneau cover, still looking at different products. Want to do a tail gate reinforcement of some type to.

I also want the adrenalin and excitement of the most amazing sports car ever designed by man, which is also a Toyota....The MKIV Twin Turbo Supra. The exhaust note on the Supra gives me an automotive orgasm everytime I hear it.

So my dilemma..

knowing very little about the next gen Tacoma, should I hold off on a 2011 Tacoma...buy the Supra and wait for next gen Tacoma or buy the Tacoma when it works best for me financially... pay it off then by the Supra.

I plan on keeping the truck until it dies. I have been burned on my car which is a long story in itself. My Tacoma will be brand new...I dont want anyone else driving it. My desired truck is rarely on the lots, so I hope to order straight from the factory with no one else test driving it. I would love to see only 3-4 miles max on the odometer when I take delivery (good reason for my paranoia)

 

get both and dont need a book about it......j/k man welcome

 

buddy in school had a red one with 800hp And that was the baddest car i have been in. 95mph topped out in 2nd. So i would get the damn thing and enjoy every set of tires. Have fun

 

LOL...I hear ya. I was worried about it being too long. Just want people to understand whats going through my mind. Wish I could afford both. Getting a raise soon, but the big raise that will help me afford both payments will be two years down the road.

 

get a supra and boost it to be a sleeper. no body kits or anything just power. then save up and pay the bills of and when the 3rd gen comes out see if you like it. if its better get one and if its no big thang then get a good deal on a second gen.

 

if the supra in the video is the one you are planning to buy go with the supra first cause the tacoma will always be there. im sure that supra or any supra for sale will go fast.

 

Well, it's a tough call. I went from a 6speed G35 Coupe myself to the Taco... I loved the G (bit slow from my old vr-4 but still fun). Never modded it (already was lowered and had the Nismo body kit and intake on it). It was fun, but highly impractical. If I kept it... I would have done color matched front lights, twin turbo kit, nicer rims/tires/suspension/ect. Already had black leather and was comfy...

In the end though, I traded it for my '08 Tacoma I had.... because the G was just too impractical. Owning a house and all... it just wasn't useful. The Tacoma is seriously fun to drive in it's own way (that 4.0 is fairly quick stock for a smaller truck I must say). There's just something about going fast in a bigger truck that handles almost car-like lol. Plus, doing 70mph in a desert wash is a whole new sense of speed and adren.... similar to doing about 125 down the pavement but in controlled chaos.... it's so fun. I plan to supercharge my '10 and some day go LT... you can get these trucks pretty quick. Look up SuperWerty on here and youtube... its' a good taste of what some boost can do.

Supra's are epic, vast respect. It's one of my top three (3000GT VR-4, R34 Skyline, Supra ) But, like all of the cars in that class (300zx included) they will KILL you in maintenance, parts, downtime, ect. But damn they are sexy, incredibly fast, and just...

Practically though, the smart move is the Tacoma first... supra second. Then you have a reliable but still fun vehicle that can get work done. Plus, it's really handy to have when you need to haul that supra's block off to get rebuilt I kinda did the same route this time, I have a 280z project car with a SBC 327 in it for long term building... I'm sure it'll be enough to need some new underwear under WOT when I'm done

 

the guy who owns this supra has changed it quite a few times. It doesnt even have the same turbo set up anymore. Some people have too much $$$ to burn. The nice thing about the supra is that there are still a few owners out there who barely drive these things and have dropped $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ into them and they are anal too about there cars. Those are the types I want to buy from because most likely, you are getting a well kept car. There is one that I am looking at and I will try to post some pics.

 

I agree with you. I just wish I knew what to expect for the redesign. I actually dont mind some of the new 4 runners if its the trail version (the front end). They do need some add ons like tires and wheels and a lift. Honestly, I see myself getting the truck in March. I used to have a 2001 Acura integra gsr and its value dipped when the RSX came out to replace it. resale value does take a hit when a vehicle is redesigned, even the ones with good resale value like tacomas and so on.

I was pretty interested in the new camaro, but the resale value on that car is completely tank-worthy since it is a chevy and they are mass producing them like crazy. There is a reason why its not on the poll too.

 

I dunno man, the first gens are holding value extremely well too... and the second gen's value is ridiculous. Hard to say until it's out though... but I still think the second gens are a pretty safe bet (at least compared to the competition) for resale. Myself though, I bought it to drive it into the ground and I wanna mod the hell out of it. So, resale isn't a huge factor to me in this case...

It's a tough call man, the second gens are nice but also not perfect. Some crap annoys the hell out of me (a/c blower, some vibrations, some evidence of cheapness everywhere, ect). Still, it's about as good as it gets in the market, and I still love the beast to death

 

This is one that I have been looking at. over 600hp. I would change the rims out and change the exhaust on it. rediculous machine.

They are SSR rims. I've never been a fan of chrome / polished rims. They remind me of a vintage muscle car look, which I dont feel matches the car. I would be looking at

Awe man, I mean I know it's your call but honestly I think that'd ruin it... those rims with that paint really make it stand out in a great way... the black would just.... nooooooooo! At least keep a chrome lip if you go black, then I would agree that WOULD be even better

Even though I got the crappy stocker Enkei's on here painted black (gold center originally) I still like the black/chrome look so much....

 

I can see myself doing a charcoal grey color on the wheels when it comes to the Royal Sapphire Pearl color that I posted too. We will see what happens. I'll cross that bridge when the timings right.

If you like to do projects, pick up stuff, transport stuff, off road, etc... Get the Tacoma first... Than project car 2nd...

Besides it is NEVER a good idea to highly modify the engine of your daily driver. I have been there and done that. I have had a 2.5L Sentra with T3/T4 Turbonetics turbocharger running 10psi. The car was fun and very quick... Getting to speeds of 120+ mph wasn't an issue no matter what gear I was in... However there was ALWAYS something going wrong with the car. I didn't have the time & money to be able to do things the right way so if something broke, I did a band aid fix, because the car had to be on the road that afternoon. It would not be such an issue if I could find the right part I needed, order it and wait several days for the part to be delivered. Now with highly modified car driven hard, when you are fixing one thing, you WILL discover two or three other things which need to be fixed... I would LOVE to have a project car again, but only if I have a reliable daily driver.

 

And this is why I don't need one
