I have a 1st gen 4x4 Im planning on getting an OME lift and upgrading tires to 285/75/16. Wondering if anyone had any experience with these tires. Any preferences? Or any other recommendations. I drive mostly around town, I’m on the interstate a few times a month, would like to get into some more offroading.

Duratracs have a known issue with wear and tire shimmy at highway speed.

They are amazing off road but if you highway drive a lot I would consider another tire.

A few additions to make me feel cool.
General's don't wear very good and the goodyears have a 2ply sidewall and cup really easy. Take a look at the Cooper st maxx or cooper at3 ltx. Or nitto ridge grapplers.

I will be DD my truck everyday about a 5 mile drive to school and even less to work. I’m not on the highway that often maybe a couple times a month. Would like to get into some more offroading.

You will regret duratracs. I have had three sets over the years.

+1 for the Nittos. I have the Terra Grappler on the Taco and the Ridge Grappler on the Jeep. I use the Jeep more aggressively off-road and the Ridge Grapplers have been great. I have found that the Terra Grappler is a great all around AT tire and even though they are not as aggressive as the RG's they have done pretty well for mild off-roading. When the time comes to replace them I'll got with Nittos again.

I'd go with the ATXs out of the two, I've used both and dislike the Duratracs. I have the ATXs on my truck and they're smooth as glass and have good tread depth. For what you're doing though it sounds like you'd be fine with an actual mud tire, if you are actually going to be doing more wheeling. In that case, Toyos or Nittos is what I'd go with.IMG_20200105_115341~2.jpg

I would encourage the falken's. I'm at ~12k miles on mine and they hardly show any wear. Got them in the E rating and they still ride good. I've mudded and trailed them a bit, as well as slapped the sidewalls a ton on curbs and they handle well

I have the Grabber AT/Xs and love them. They've been on my truck for roughly 14k miles and still look new. They're super smooth and are wearing evenly. I'm not a rock crawler, but I have taken then up and down some pretty gnarly western trails with a lot of scree and sharp edges. These have performed flawlessly. Snow performance has been good, too. I don't have any feedback on thick mud. I left that stuff back east :)

tell me more about the wear on Duratracs

i have had them for about 20k miles
not sure about tire shimmy at highway speed? i have my truck upto 90mph at times and they glide like silk and very quiet

they were amazing at crawling through a foot of sloppy wet heavy blizzard snow last year

They are a mass produced tire, I had a set it was perfect (but noisy), a co-worker had the same set on another tacoma and it shook like a bitch, no matter how it was balanced.

My customers always have crazy wear issues with them due to lack of rotations, they really need to be done every 6 months. More than any normal tire.

But I have more than 1 experience with a tire to make a judgement.

I would have gone with wildpeaks but the Cooper AT3 4S made more sense for my climate. The wildpeaks are a good looking tire.

Those would be a wiser choice over the other two tires you were looking at, just my opinion based off my experiences

Wildpeaks sell because they’re cheap , like a huge portion of TW. The tires are shit. Go with the NITTO or something other than Falken Dollar Store Peaks

the DT where i have had them rotated every 5k miles so far did tell me the balancing is 'complicated'

and i do think my MPG has suffered 1 to 3 miles roughly from the stock wranglers
but they do look cool i think!

maybe i have the 'unicorn' tires so far :notsure: time will tell ... i would like better fuel economy on the next brand
