I've been using Liquid Wrench Harsh Environment rust inhibitor recently. I don't live in an area that typically sees a lot of snow and salt, though Toyota labels my state as a "cold weather state".

But as a measure of caution I figured it couldn't hurt. I don't do the entire frame. Mostly just the prone areas around the inside and outside of the cats. I used an entire can just on the inside of those areas...using the various frame holes to completely flood the inside. I also spray down my leaf springs.

I vote cosmoline. There's a reason the military used it. But that's just a random ass opinion, being in AZ, I don't even know what rust looks like.

Does this stay wet or dry? Liquid wrench makes a great rust penetrator that I keep in my tool box along with kroil

It's a thick product....just thin enough to come out of the can. I wouldn't say it dries per say. But it does thicken up after a day or so as to not drip. I sprayed the outside and just smeared it around with my hand....with a glove on, of course. I jacked up the frame so the axle would droop. That way I could spray in between the leafs better.

I laid down some absorbent mats under those areas overnight. In the morning there were some drips. But the next day there was nothing on my garage floor. So it does tack up some.

I use 3M Body Cavity Wax, it doesnt smell like a chemical factory and dries enough to not get all over you if do anything under the truck.

It was a undercoating type material at one time, I thought. Maybe they've changed things. I don't know

I used Woolwax this year. Smell is almost pleasant. I have not used Fluid Film so I can't compare. It is a greasy mess. I bought a $3 tyvek suit from Amazon to throw in the trash when done. Probably should have disposable eye protection too. The ones I used might become disposable at this point.

I didn't do it my first winter so I went through and hit the rusty welds and other areas with a rust converter flat black enamel. I was surprised the exhaust flanges and bolts were so rusted. The piping is not, but I'll likely be replacing bolts if I ever do anything with the exhaust. I'm not sure if I got the front good enough yet. I'll see this spring what overspray burned off the motor and diff and redo accordingly.

Wow. I’ve never tried Cosmoline but I looked through the Rustcoaters website pics and they look like a Ma-&-Pop shop that do a great job. Removing parts, steam cleaning, drying everything, taping off stuff and then thoroughly applying the product seems like the way-to-go (except for a brand new vehicle) If this Cosmoline stuff stays soft, it might be worth getting them to do the initial spray and then just touch-up your truck with a few cans of Fluid Film the following years.
It looks pretty labor-expensive though; did they give you a quote and is it a one day turn around?

FF, besides being the single most disgusting smelling substance on the planet, is stupid easy and quick to apply. I did it once so far on my 19, but I'm looking to spray a little more on the front welds. That will take all of of 5 minutes to get it on jack stands. Wear clothes you don't mind burning later.
