It’s crazy how different allocations are state to state. I have been stock piling Weller SR and Antique for bit now so I have something to trade up for eventually. I have no problem picking up at least one bottle of each on a weekly basis for $24 and $49 respectively. But here in central Ohio some of my favorites are like phantoms. Only rarely spoken of are EH Taylor, Blantons, Stagg of any sort. Eagle Rare pops up occasionally and Buffalo Trace sometimes. When I can’t find my favorites I stick with the above, WT 101, Elijah Craig, or Evan Taylor BIB. I’ve been fond of Cleveland Whiskey Black Reserve recently though. It makes a damn nice old fashioned with some black walnut bitters.

Apparently I got lucky as well. I’m currently working on a bottle of batch 12 I picked up while on vacation in FL a while back. I would definitely like to find another bottle so I don’t feel so bad every time I take a pour. It’s near impossible to find in OH.

My boss picked up another bottle to try out. Never heard of Orphan Barrel but it’s a cool idea (they find lost barrels from old distilleries and bottle them). I’m not a scotch person at all but really enjoyed this one.

I've had it once. It is interesting to taste what is, for all intents and purposes, an unaged whiskey. I think that stuff "ages" for 5-10 minutes in the barrel, so it is technically aged, but obviously sold as the base whiskey. Similar to Buffalo Trace White Dog where you can taste the different mash bills prior to aging. It won't taste quite like whiskey in the traditional sense, but you'll have fun with it. I'm curious to hear your thoughts once cracked open.

I also have a bottle of the Silver OMG Pure Rye at home. The "OMG" isn't millennial speak, it refers to the Old MononGahela river. It is a similar concept to what the Western Oat is that you picked up, only the mash bill is rye and malted rye (as opposed to oat and malted barley) and it is a one-off offering they did back in, 2015? 2016? They attempted to match a recipe/mash bill from the late 1800s with the OMG rye. The story goes that the rye was really popular and eventually gained some demand on the east coast. It was typically served as a clear, unaged spirit. When they started shipping it to the east coast, it was put in to oak barrels for transport. During the slow journey, it would age and gain some color. Eventually, they figured that aging it would lead to a better product, much to the chagrin of the Utah locals who always thought of it as a clear spirit.

They sold some of the distillate as OMG Pure Rye, but much of it went in to barrels to be released as just OMG Rye, which I suppose should come out any year, now. I'll send them an e-mail to see if they have any info on the release date.

The OMG Pure Rye has a very interesting taste, though not one that I'm necessarily fond of. I had two bottles, gave one to a buddy and keep the rest of the other bottle around for when I want to give people a full rye experience (pure rye, basic traditional rye, barrel finished rye, then MWND because it is so awesome). On the palate, it honestly tastes a bit like Fruity Pebbles.

    OMG Pure Rye.jpg

Ain't a damn thing wrong with either of those!

Whiskey of the Year? Who knows. Dickel Bottled-in-Bond finished top of the list in this year's Whiskey Advocate and that was probably my least favorite whiskey of 2019, so obviously a lot of subjectivity. That Batch 12 Stagg Jr., though, is right up my alley. I think it is damn good.

It's outrageous how much a single pour can be. I can't find a bottle of Blanton's anywhere locally but most bars have it....for like $25-30 a pour

Luckily, I went to dinner New Years Eve and they had it for $12 so I finally got to try it. Tasted close enough to Eagle Rare that I'll just stick with that lol

I think the mini bottles are different type of batches?

unless someone knows where I can get a full bottle for $100 or less?

I find it hard to get Balaton's also. But I do have a substitute. John J. Bowman Single Barrel.
What people don't know is that it is Buffalo Trace mash bill #1. Distilled at Buffalo Trace twice then shipped to the Bowman Distillery in VA. It's then distilled again and aged for 10 years in new Oak barrels. What your basically getting if I am not wrong is a
10 year old Single Barrel 100 proof Buffalo Trace or Eagle Rare for less than $50. Maybe even EH Taylor Single Barrel.
    If I'm not mistaken it's MB #1 also. Blanton's is MB #2. I think.
