RTTs look like a pain in the ass to me. I generally wheel in the southeast where you are wheeling parks and it looks like a PITA to have to pack your camp up evrey morning to go wheeling. With my one minute Coleman tent and cot it takes me about 5 mins a 1 beer to setup camp, and I can leave it there all week/weekend while I wheel. We also wheel in trails surrounded by trees that would rip the tent off the truck or damage it if you take a wrong line, coupled with a crazy high center of gravity having that thing on the roof, would make for a bad time wheeling. Plus it would suck to flop or roll over on it.

I guess it's good if you want to go out and camp a few feet off a gravel fire road in the middle of no where, not knocking that at all I would be ALL over that if we had stuff like that around here, but for tight trails and hard to extreme crawling they dont make any sense.

My truck is going to be a 4 runner so I can sleep in the back of it.

Neat and those trails aren't as tight as the places we wheel down here. Drive on over the kentucky or TN and we can show you.

I still call total BS on this. I miiiiiiight believe the setup is faster, but the take down? No way. Taking down a tent is the biggest pain in the a**. And yes, I've been camping. And no, I don't own a RTT.

Hardshell RTT here. Before that I’d sleep in the bed.

Setup/takedown is literally 1 minute, plus can keep my pillows and bag up in there. Don’t have to worry about trees/branches snagging it. Super comfortable mattress and don’t need nice ground to sleep like a king. Only real downside is that you’re limited on space, but I’m just sleeping in the thing - not spending tons of time up there.

I don’t often stay at the same place for multiple days so not being able to “leave camp” isn’t really an issue.

I honestly didn’t know how much I’d appreciate it, but since having one I’d never go back.

If I were to go with a RTT, a hard shell seems like the way to go. For the speed, durability and convenience of it.

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
So the question is. When your buddies stuff begins to wash away and force him out of his tent, do you say...
“Sure brutha, come on in there is room.”
“Hell no, keep ya granola ass outside and stay in the rain.”

    Or...fill in the blank.

    Like, so many.
IDK man, I camp a pretty good bit and it takes a minute to set up my tent and get my ground pad and sleeping bag in. Breaking down is probably longer getting everything stored back in the bags and put up. It would be nice to just pop open a RTT and have everything already in there and ready to go.

Dont believe me I dont care, been wheeling down in the SE for 20yrs now and have done some west coast wheeling, way tighter down in the Appalachian mountains. Last trip out I watched a guy almost flop his truck trying to keep his RTT out of a tree branch/trunk.

Rigs are built for different terrain...

Mine's daily... cause there's no other vehicle I'd rather be driving than my truck.

I do need to swallow my pride and get a daily though... I feel bad putting so many work/freeway miles on my truck. And it sure would be nice to not ALWAYS have to finish a project so I can drive it to work the next day.

Its a lot nicer being intimate in a RTT than it is in a ground tent.

My thoughts on RTTs since my buddy has one:

They are pretty bad-ass, comfortable, and look cool, but they are just so damn expensive. Even though I could afford one, my brain wont let my body shell out that kind of money for something I can do for free ( I just sleep in the truck bed if the weather allows.) Plus when we want to go make a quick trail run from the campsite he either has to jump in with me or we have to wait on him to mobilize.
