2019 Tacoma SR5 V6. Advice on towing car on trailer totaling 5600lbs

So this weekend i'm planning on transporting my g35 on a uhaul trailer from Charleston, SC to Charlotte, NC (211 miles). The total estimated weight for for the car and trailer is around 5600lbs. I know that is under but on the high side of the truck's towing capabilities... but is there reason for concern towing that much for that length of travel? Just wanted to make sure before i hit the road. I got a 7,500lb class hitch on the truck and brakes and tires are good. Thoughts or opinions?

 

With that weight I’d prefer a brake controller, but I’m going to assume the hauler has at least surge brakes.

Don’t assume you’ll be cruising 70mph+. Keep it in S4 and ECT and look for 60mph (grades excepted of course) average and you’ll be good for that distance. Fill up before you leave.

It’s not going to be a rock star, but you’re unlikely to break things. What type of hills and grades will you have?

edit: scan gauge for transmission temps?

 

I'm sticking strictly to HWY and interstate driving... doesn't look like too many steep grades along the way... it def will be some increased elevation from Charleston to Charlotte.

 

Utilize engine-braking using the S-mode gear limiter. Don't be afraid of ~4k RPM as it engine-brakes while also using normal braking to slow down.

I find that a sweet-spot for my towing cruising speed and power-balance is when my speed and gear together keeps my RPM above 2.5k and just feather gas pedal to not fuel-dump constantly...as an example 45-50mph on S3 (ECT PWR on or off doesnt matter when I shift on S-Mode 1-5)

SR5 with no tow package? So probably no transmission cooler. Do what @RushT said. Keep her in 4 at 60mph, drop her down into 3 if you need more power to climb a hill. The truck will pull best between 2.5K and 3K RPM.

Probably expect to see 10 to 13mpg

 

guessing one stop for gas, while there you will ponder why you cranked such high RPM's yet the truck seemed happy about it.

 

it has the tow package... i want to say for 2018 and up tow package became a standard.

No, i have no intention to have the truck become a regular car hauler rig. This is maybe a once a year deal maybe not even that.

Did a similar haul with the same uhaul trailer.
ECT and choosing the gears worked for me. Like someone else said, MPG will be hit hard, but the Tacoma held up well.

 

Be patient and properly load the vehicle on the car trailer (heavier in front) and you should be golden. GLWT.

 

I towed recently at about 4000lbs. Big fat travel trailer. I wasn’t kind to it but had a good WDH and brake controller. I kept it at ~70-72 on Texas highways and averaged a whopping 8.5mpg or so. But yeah, I was pushing it hard to see how it held up. It spun those rpms but didn’t really seem to complain. 3rd gear at 4.5k and above was actually pretty impressive in the hills.

 

You will be fine. I towed my 328xi to mechanic for motor swap and had zero issues with Uhaul. Take it slow, stay in right lane and keep longer distance for stopping. By the way had new engine in truck bed.

 

I've never pulled super heavy, but I have a flat-nosed enclosed trailer that is like pulling a parachute in the Kansas wind. 70mph in 5th I'm running 2800. I can run 75 at 3200 but the truck really starts drinking the gas.

I pulled the same trailer from Kansas to Maryland and back twice, once with a 2nd Gen and once with a Ford EcoBoost... it really makes me appreciate how nice it is to tow with a 3rd gen!

 

why not rent a bigger truck and save the wear and tear on yours
