So I won this gun

I won a browning a-bolt synthetic rifle in 280 rem. I don't know anything about the rifle or the cartrige. I will be picking it up @ a local gun store and I hear that I can choose another caliber or get something in the same price range. I will probally get 30.06 or maybe 243. I already have a winchester model 70 in 270wsm. What do you guys think. The shop where I will be getting this gun stays well stocked. What is this gun worth and is there a better rifle for the money? Probally pick it up this weekend.

 

^agree with Ben. Not a very common caliber. You already have a .270
I think I'd go with a 243. Less recoil, fun to shoot, very common, you can find ammo for it anywhere! Ive taken several deer and pigs with it.

 

What about a rifle similer in cost? Is there a better option for the money?

I'd go a 243 or the old standby 30.06. I have a Browning A-Bolt Stainless Stalker in a .300 WinMag. GREAT GUN! 243 is a fun round and the 30.06 is a good all around caliber.

I'd get a remington model 700 .243 and a decent scope.

If you look on Gunbroker there are very few selling for less than $700, but I guess it depends on what the shop or whoever is in charge of the give away decides its worth. I'd go with the 243 since you've already got a 270, but you haven't said what you'll use it for. I personally think the 270 can do anything the 30-06 can do, and the 280 is the same basic gun.

 

I like the 06 cause you can load it from 100-220 grains. So you can shoot anything from Varmonts to Bears and everything in between

 

I mostly deer hunt but the county I live in dosen't have a gun season archery only. When I gun hunt I have to go an hour or longer. I have wanted to try coyote hunting but there is a lot of cover around here. The 270wsm I have is a super-fast round for yotes I could use it and use the .06 for deer or keep the set up on the model 70 and get a 243 for the yotes. This really is a good problem to have.

 

Just curious, what part of WV are you from? I was there this past weekend and kept seeing a silver Taco with FJ wheels around.

.308 maybe? pretty versatile and common round.

 

I was in Mingo some. I went and rode Indian Ridge, Pinnacle Creek on Saturday and the went to Logan/Man and rode Rockhouse on Sunday. Started in Northfork and rode over to Pineville on the new connector. Went through Gilbert on the way to Logan. Back to Gilbert for lunch on Rockhouse. I swear I saw a Taco just like yours in atleast two different towns.

 

Ah the Hatfield Mccoy Trails. Did you have a good time? And where did you stay?

 

Yeah it was a good time. It's a long way from my home (6 hours). It was my first time there, and I will definately come back. I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Logan. West Va is an "interesting" place. i will say that most of the people were absolutely down to earth and cool as any Ive ever met.
