I lived in Eagle River for 12 years. Do yourself a favor and get a set of studded snow tires. You don't need chains in Anchorage/JBER/Eagle River, etc. I went an entire winter without shifting into 4WD with just some weight in the back of my Isuzu Trooper (5MT) and a set of studded snow tires. Your Taco will be more than capable, even with just stud-less snow tires.

You will need a block heater if you park outside. Last time I was there, it was the law to plug in your car when it is below 25°F or something around there. Carry extra de-icing wiper fluid. They don't use salt on the roads; they use dirt/grit that gets everything dirty, and gets kicked up and onto your windshield. Get a long-reaching window ice scraper, that has a good brush on it, that you will need to push off the 10+ inches of snow that will fall overnight on a somewhat regular basis.

If you have kids, getting a snow day is extremely rare. Always plan on them going to school in the snow. There are kids in the mountains that get picked up in a jacked up 6x6 bus. If that bus can't make it, you get a snow day.

Wow, that's crazy. I have family members that live in North Carolina and they got like a dusting of snow, less than an inch and they had off from school.

Yup, the mere word or thought of the word most places results in a delay or closing!

Kids have to go out to recess until the temperatures drop below -20°. They aren’t allowed to stay inside the classroom.
