Manual will be worse. The new 6AT is completely tuned for mpg even if it's still not great but the 6MT still has both a shorter 6th and a shorter rear end.

Depends on how you drive. The manual is geared way lower, so ar higher speeds it drinks gas. I commute on a 75mph interstate. Winter driving is 17 to 19 mpg, summer is 21 or less. These are tank averages. I've seen as high as 23 on individual trips, but this is empty, wind to my back, Jesus pushing me along.

The AUTO is pretty good IF you keep the RPM's low. Just hate the way it shifts. Getting anywhere between 30 mpg (flat ground, no wind and ~ 70 MPH & 1800 RPM) to 18 MPG (headwind, hills, lower gears and higher RPM).

On paper the AT is better. I get crap gas mileage on my AT, but that's because I don't drive slow. I'm sure some MT drivers are doing better than my AT.

AT for just driving around and not worrying about it will get better. If you are cognizant and try to drive to maximise mileage you can beat an AT with a MT, but you'd have to work at it.

60 or so, neutral coast down to yonder stop light, shift well before the 3.5 will make any power. ;)

They’re the same if you drive the same.

If you’re into hypermiling techniques and driving specifically for mpgs for fun (not many people are haha) then you can get better with the manual.

    Most wont.

A few OE parts from fancy trucks
    www.fuelecomomy.gov

Since their formula revision their numbers are surprisingly accurate for a stock vehicle, reasonably driven in reasonable weather.

You'll actually learn more there than by listening to 'but my truck' numbers from internet strangers. Where you are clueless of conditions or their arithmetic skills. :D

BTW, if you want MPG, don't buy a truck. Any truck.

If you have to have a truck, keep in mind MPG is only a factor in TCO. A truck that gets better MPG and costs less out the door may wind up costing more over the life of ownership if it's not reliable.

Physics say they will get similar mileage. Tough to beat those laws.

No experience 3rd gen, but 2nd gen 60mph is 2k rpm. Takes hills and tows better, but you can kiss mpg goodbye

    This!
What are you expecting- it's the same truck (weight, aerodynamics, nearly same ratios, etc)

Correct, I was attempting to answers OP's question, referring to difference in MPG
"what are you guys getting in MPG on the new tacomas?"

Agree that it is basically the same truck. But hard to find someone that owns a stick but drives it like an auto.

    My Fuelly data disagrees

I averaged 18.4 in my AT over 50,000 miles

19.4 in my MT over 97,000(which also has over 10,000 towing miles). Highway is usually 20+ during the summer.
