I always reference real numbers reporting of thousands of vehicles on sites like Fuelly to see what a real world model really averages.

Btw, real world increase in mpg from 2nd to 3rd Gen appears to be only 1mpg on average haha. So spending thousands of dollars extra for a worse engine, transmission and driving experience, and only gaining a single mpg or two.. fun. Doesn’t add up financially.

That said, I know you can get better mileage with the manual transmission, but only if you drive it right. Can’t just drive normal. If you’re into hypermiling the manual is the only way to go, period. If you’re not, modern Autos get better mpgs than manuals.

I have a manual and as it happens was just working on my spread sheet for my mileage. I have a lifetime mileage of 14.96 litres per 100 kilometers.

I have a 6mt and with the stock tune city :15-17 avg mpg. Highway stock: 18-20 avg mgp

With the OVtune: 19-20 mpg city 20-22 highway.

This mileage is all relative to how you drive the 6mt of course.

A friend of mine has the 6at and is stock tune and gets about 15mpg of course he does drive like a bat out of hell.

3rd gen is about 300 to 600 lbs (based on trim) heavier than the 2nd gen. So achieving 1mpg better is actually a significant improvement.

Agree except for the neutral coast down.. if you lift in gear, fuel cut means you burn zero. Neutral means it has to keep itself running.
Edit: Well, at least until you lug down to about 1300RPM in gear.. then the engine fires back up.

Classic n=1 and your MT is clearly mostly highway with that kind of mileage.... I can get 21 if I'm around 65 on the freeway but stop and go or 75+ and I'm suddenly looking at 15. Hell even dealing with moderate traffic and people dodging in and out of lanes makes 18 a challenge even at ideal speeds.

Overall, the AT is going to do better assuming people drive them similarly and in a healthy mix of conditions. There's a reason it's rated better across the board.

I upgraded from a 2016 SR5 DCSB automatic to a 2020 TRD OR manual. I got about 20-22 mpg in the city and 24 on the highway with the automatic and 19 mpg in the city with the manual (haven't taken it on a road trip yet where I paid attention to the MPG). Besides the transmission, the tires are different between the two trucks. Also the OR doesn't have the front air dam. I also tend to rev the engine more with the manual compared to the automatic.

Towing a 2300 lb boat on the highway I got about 15 mpg with the automatic.

These are summer numbers. I get 1-2 mpg less in the winter (Minnesota). I'm not entirely sure why. Denser air perhaps.

I've had all 3 diff gens. One manual (04) and two auto (15,19). I have averaged right around 300 miles a fillup in all three trucks.

6th gear in a manual is equivalent to an automatic ratio between 4th and 5th; highway driving shows up the mpg advantage of the automatic. In local driving, I get 21 to 23 with my manual, but only about 19 at 75+ mph.

Yup it’s mostly highway. At 55 for extended periods of time I’ll see mid 20s. Low 20s at 60-70.

my auto fuel economy was all over the place as it usually ran 4 or 5th gear. Plenty of trips where I saw low teens on a stock truck. Towing I saw 12 tops, 10 or less was normal.

I’m sure the new programming helped the AT, but my MT is far more consistent and better geared than my AT ever dreamed of. Rarely do I need to leave 6th gear where the AT would for the slightest thing.

Yeah but our 2.7 Tacomas cost less, get pretty good MPG, and are reliable as heck. I think it's a win, win, win

Yeah I'm biased hehe but I can get 26mpg easily on any mixed road trip and even in the winter with a 10 minute commute I still average 20mpg and the truck doesn't even warm up.

Generally I can get over 400 miles per tank of gas
