When driving in fifth gear around 65/70 miles per hour A high-pitched rattle happens While I’m giving a gas. Goes away when I let off the gas. It almost sounds like a loose gear or something of sorts? Any thoughts? Thank you in advance.

Actually it sounds like a cheap plastic baby rattle. That’s the best I can describe it.

    Maybe detonation then.

Run a tank of premium fuel. If it's better or gone, you may want to decarbon the top end and take a look at your plugs.

Just a possibility that's easy to explore

I have this same problem but it’s pretty intermittent. from my research it would be your carrier baring for the drive shaft. if you get under the truck and you wiggle it around and it has a bunch of play then that would probably be it. I haven’t changed mine out yet because it seems pretty harmless other than it sounding like i’m going to grenade the driveline. kind of an involved process too.

Yeah, without being in the truck to hear it, that's what I'd guess also - it's having a hard time because it's in 5th gear and detonating under the load. If you downshift and it goes away with higher engine revs, it's probably detonation. Maybe bad gas? I'd try some 93 octane also.

its been a minute but here's the update on my 2008 Tacoma. I was able to take my truck to my buddy who repairs, refurbishes landcruisers. There are some cruisers in his photos that he's worked on/sold/bought. he was able to get up it on the lift and diagnose it. First the U-joint was bad. good news is Toyota covered it. Apparently there's been enough similar issues that they just replace it, but haven't called for a total recall. Second, a bad right front wheel bearing. The third party warranty covered that but the wheel hub need to be replaced. Not sure if that's common with replacing wheel bearings. That was not covered so that ran, after taxes $280. Not bad considering the actual cost for the repairs was close to $900. Thanks for everyone's input!
