My truck has been getting mostly ignored the last few months because I've been working on the 996 Turbo I picked up in June. It needed lots of random maintenance and a few bugs worked out (it came to me on a flatbed truck, having not run in over two years).

If I'm replacing stuff I might as well upgrade it, right? So, as part of working said bugs out, I ended up getting a new custom tune done on the car. Sweet baby Jesus, what a difference. SO much more (and smoother) power now.

But after doing all the work to the car, I have good news and bad news about it:

    - The good news is the car has a nearly new upgraded clutch (done by previous owner)

    - The bad news is the clutch is slipping under load

    - The good news is it's because the clutch is only rated to handle 600ft/lbs of torque. :bananadance:

I managed to get two flat tires on the way home from work... Truck is sitting on jack stands in my driveway and I'm sitting in Less Schwab.

There was accident debris right at the entrance to my neighborhood that I didn't notice in the dark and wet. One body bolt in each of my driver's side tires. :annoyed:

Tilton clutch :).......then when you see the price just have your tuner adjust the tune.

Was it slipping the whole time or just at peak torque? Isn't peak torque at like 3k rpm on the 996s?

I love 996s. This is my third one (I've also had a '99 C2 and a '02 C4S). Personally, I don't mind the headlights, especially on the 996.2. They've aged well. And the reliability issues the non-turbo models are known for are greatly overblown. And the reliability of the turbo models is legendary (the turbo and non-turbo models have completely different engines that share virtually no parts, for those not familiar with these cars).

My peak torque should be around 4000rpm (I don't have factory turbos), it starts to slip around 3500 when under a heavy load. It wasn't slipping before the new tune. Luckily, there are plenty of options for clutches for these cars to hold the power I'm making that are (relatively) inexpensive.

im sure theres tons of better options now. I had a friend whos dad had a pretty heavily modified one he raced and just remember the only clutch that he ran and could hold up well were the Tiltons. Would be fun to take his old car setup and put it on modern stuff and see it run even better Im sure (this was like 2008-2010 time frame).

I dont overly know much about the 996 platform (or Porsche in general) outside shit was expensive to fix.

Is it just a flash on type tune or one that the tuner sat with the car on the dyno for?

What kind of HP is it putting to the tires?

Parts are definitely more expensive for Porsches, but if you do your own work they aren't that bad. They get really expensive really fast if you have to pay someone else to work on them though (I can only afford to have cars like this because I do all my own work).

The tune is a custom tune for my car. The tuner is in Chicago, so we started with a base tune and will continue tweaking it as I send him logs.

Power at the wheels should be somewhere north of 500hp/550tq.

Fuuu. My brother's 340i msport has ~430hp at the wheels now and that thing is a rocket already. Once he upgrades his fuel system he'll be running full e85 and pushing that same amount. Can't imagine what that feels like in a 911 with awd and less weight.

You're right though, half the time working on german cars aren't bad as long as 1) you're doing the work 2) you dont use OEM parts.

My old C55 I did most of the work myself and bought OE parts that were a fraction oem. Even things like OEM foglights were like 280 each, but literally had the same part number as a regular bosch fog light for 40 bucks.

Same on my RS6; I could do most of the work myself except:
    1. Timing belt (every 40K miles, not a typo)
    2. Transmission flush/fill was complex and I didn't have a lift.
    3. Factory DRC Suspension (Pressurized cross linked hydraulically) - nothing could possibly go wrong with that... ever...

I changed the rotors and pad, plugs, driveline bushings and a few other things.

That engine compartment was very tight with a V8 Twin Turbo in front of the front axle...
Parts cost the same on a $100k as it's still a $100k car even though ya bought it at $30k 7years later...

I rarely use Porsche-branded parts. These cars are almost 20 years old now and the good/bad non-OEM parts are well documented at this point.
Also, being in the VW family there is some definite parts sharing. Case in point: a month ago I replaced a bunch of the check valves while chasing a boost leak. One of the valves was $50 from Porsche. It looked awfully familiar though. Sure enough, VW used the identical check valve on the 1.8T engine, and they're $8 for the VW part, which is THE SAME PART.

Same except I can cheat and take it to a Toyota place or sub a Toyota part. An oil change at the Lexus dealership (with Toyota parts) is $120 and is $78 at Toyota. Same with parts. The Lexus parts department will sell you a Toyota part with a markup. It’s dumb.
