Oh sorry i didnt see this. Yeah it would be commando but in 10.5 with some more modern stuff here and there. Challenging myself to build a truck gun out of 100% used or on sale parts. Just bought the last part so i cant wait to put everything together this weekend.

The discussion got me looking at Commando's. I forget what they called those long flash hiders. Also wasn't the adjustable stock metal back then? I've seen pics of them without the forward assist too.

Thank you. I have no idea what I’m doing most of the time but every once in awhile I get some good ones.

The CAR-15 is an interesting family. Most people think of the Colt Commando type guns, but pretty much all the Colt designed guns are "CAR's". So things like the M16 are in that family.

There were basically two models....both called XM177's. The Army used the XM177E1 and the Air Force adopted the XM177 (but called it a GAU-5). The GAU-5 is based on a Colt 610. The XM177E1 is based on a Colt 609. The primary difference is a 609 has a forward assist while the 610 does not.

They later came out with the XM177E2 and GAU-5/a (think that was it?) that had 11.5" barrels.

They did in fact have aluminum two position butt stock.

The long flash hider was weird in the sense it was able to suppress flash and also slightly reduced sound. It ended up being classified as a NFA item by the ATF. not a clue what was different on it over the ones you can buy from brownells now.

Ive been on a bit of a reto AR-10/15 kick lately. Rather wanting a Brownells BRN-10 or a Brownells "prototype". Thankfully they are doing a good job at still making them and releasing/updating parts for them

Soooo I just impulse bought a 300BO upper and don’t actually know anything about it. Can I drop it on a 223 pistol lower and use all the same mags/bcg etc?

yep. 300BO is basically based off the 556 case. You can make 300BO brass by cutting down 556 brass and reforming it.

Be VERY careful to keep your 300BO ammo away from your 556 uppers though. I’d even suggest completely different color mags you use only for 300BO. It will likely chamber just fine, but then your gun blows up......

Yes! Same mags, same lower, same stripped upper, same bcg, etc. difference barrel and chamber.

barrel length and buffer combos get into an interesting debate. What length barrel are you planning? Assuming it will be a pistol? 10.5 is widely accepted as the perfect length for 300blk. It’s even better- consistent and reliable with a suppressor.

The original where made with a chamber inside them, which effectively puts them in the realm of suppressor. The reproductions dont have the chamber to allow purchase/use without having to get a stamp.

I got a 7.5” psa upper for $125 so it’s not up to me haha. I might run a few rounds through it and see what I think. If I hate it I’ll probably flip it for an optic or something.

Well "realm of suppressor" is giving them a bit to much credit since everything i've seen only really had them reducing sound by 1-4db. I didnt know of the internals though so thats interesting. What I have read is they were more designed to just change the signature noise of the carbines. Then again other people claim it was for added back pressure so who really knows.

Still a cool piece of ar history though.

Anyone on here mount a gun rack up in the cab of their truck? I have a nice rack that flush mounts to the roof but I’ve never taken down my headliner to see what’s up there for backing. 13 DCLB. Or any other good ideas to full time carry a Ar platform in the truck?

I got a truckvault from a police cruiser on craigslist. I think they make one that will go under the rear seat in a pickup
