My plates were shipped to the dealership, try giving them a call if they recieved them. They should've notified you, I had to call mine as the temporary tag was almost expired to have them send it to my house.

Hello everyone. I’m a new owner of a 2020 TRD off-road, a fairly new resident of tacomaworld, and a long time resident of Minnesota. Where do people off-road their Tacoma’s in Minnesota? Every spot I know off is 3+ hours away. I’ve managed to find some spots in my hood that are not obviously illegal (hah!), but I want to get out and do something real.

I just got mine and it took like 5 weeks too. They are sitting in my front seat. I should have put them on earlier but I got lazy.

Wait, you wash your truck? My wears dirt, road salt, and filth as a badge of honor. I got it muddy the day I bought it this fall. Hasn’t been washed yet. ;)

I was thinking it might be time though. I hate it when the dash instruments get dusty.

I like my truck to be clean, I dont offroad much, so I would rather it sparkle all the time.

Plus I have kids and they love writing on my wifes car in the salt and road grime.... she has words scratched into the whole side of her car.

EDIT: the kids already know they are not allowed to write on my truck, but at 5 and 7 years old, they forget pretty often.

Where is your hood...? But 3+ hours is the nature of the beast living in MN. Northern MN and UP Michigan have some interesting stuff, but other than that you're looking at 10+ hours drive time westward to anyplace worthwhile.

I'm St. Paul. I don't mind traveling up north once in a while. My family has a cabin in the Brainerd Lakes area not far from the Spider Lake ORV trails. But it's nice to have something closer to home for those days I feel like messing around for an hour. I grew up in the country and there were several unofficial places to wheel in close by. You have to be a local to know about them.

TBQH, I don't like it when my truck gets so dirty that it gets me dirty during my daily drive. I might leave it covered in mud for a day or too, but then it gets impractical. And I actually tend to avoid mud for that reason. It didn't bother me so much when I was in my youth, but it does now. Also, my trucks these days actually look nice when clean.

do you have any pics of your truck with the salt road spray on it? is it real noticeable?
my old black truck does not handle it well 'appearance wise' so i like to keep it clean, but more so that my body panels do not rot like mid west trucks do
perhaps the 3rd gen body panels are less prone to corrosion :notsure:

but the wand wash i have used for over 2 decades just does not do a thorough job of washing it all off UNLESS i take a hand sponge and soap to it before the rinsing
when its 10d out that is challending to do even in the half-sheltered ghetto wash

i am testing out some product called Salts Gone from Texas but have not been able to test it on my black truck, we have had not much for snow this year on the NE/IA border, its all north in SD and MN!

but my relatives red 2nd gen had a bit of dried hazy salt spray from their trip into middle Iowa last month. I rinsed it with this stuff and it looked positive for taking the salt off very efficiently

im not convinced washing modern vehicles prevents rust. Rust doesn’t normally form on the areas that are washable. In my n=1 experience It tends it occur in the nooks and crannies underneath failed seals (e.g. under the rubber seal on the windshield).

Also, here is what consumer reports thinks of those rust protection products the dealer offers:

i've had a few spots show up on body panels, one in the tailgate crimp and currently one developing on the edge where i guess the paint wore or chipped.
had one spot pop up last year on top of the driver door sill where the extra cab portion is welded or whatever, soft paint or something who knows how it started, i know i have tried to keep the door jams clean all these years

i sure hope there is nothing starting under the windshield! i was very fortunate my bed did not rust out, very minimal surface stuff found, with all the naked steel under the plastic liner when i took it off last summer

I blame my windshield rust that occurred on long-since-retired Forester on the window replacement I had done. I'm guessing they exposed some sheet metal and/or failed to seal it properly. Note that it wasn't visible until many years after. I bought the Forester new in 2001 and had until 2016. I washed it every once in a while and it only rusted in two places: along the windshield and the carrier bars on the roof. I'm not sure that washing it more often would have prevented either.

from my experience the local dealers here in NE know jackcrap about effective corrosion protection, which sucks

darn, i just had a new windshield put in by the body shop last year for the first time
it was a reputable collision shop, but there are certain 'mishaps' i found when my truck was returned back to me
a year later I am still trying to square it away with them

I dont have any pictures of the truck with salt spray on it as I usually dont let the salt sit for more than 12 hours. But, its not super noticable, the truck just looks lighter in color and matte finished. the salt b gone stuff works well, but you still need to rinse alot.

My usual car wash routine is to wash the truck before the snowfalls, then on my way home I will hit the wash so the truck doesnt sit overnight with salt on it. Washing before the snow helps to prevent any scratches in the paint when I have to brush off the snow, rubbing salty dirty snow on paint will leave small scratches in the paint.

Gandy dancer trail in pine county is nice. About an hour and forty min from Mpls. I have a farm about 30 mins from there.
Let me know when you want to drive up there!
