I am new to the Tacoma World so bear with me.. In November of 2019 I bought a new Tacoma Off-Road. When I purchased the truck the dealer told me it gets roughly 17 mi/gal city and 21 mi/gal highway. Also, the first time I filled my tank completely, the dash said I had 390 miles to empty. Now when I fill up the dash will say 280 miles to empty and I maybe get 15 mi/gal. Is this normal? I have put 2500 mi since purchasing the truck.

It all comes down to the area you live in and how you drive your truck. I average 17mpg on most drives. I can get 18mpg if I keep my foot out of it around the city. The lot porter at my dealer only gets 14mpg out of my truck ......... That little bastard !

When my truck was stock (TRD PRO) I'd get ~18 miles per gallon on the highway. 15 or so in town. With mods, i'm at 16 on the highway and 13-14 in town. I live in Oklahoma. I know elevation has something to do with it.

Yeah, windy days it definitely goes down. Going to Kansas tomorrow with 25-35 mph winds. MPG is going to suffer for sure.

You’ll get all kinds of replies but if you want accurate numbers you should keep a log and do the actual math. I have found the computer to be overly generous.
Plenty of times the comp would show over 20 mpg and I would have used 1/4 tank and didn’t go 100 miles.

When I fill up DTE varies from 400 to 425 and when I did the math for a few months my overall (highway, local, not much idling) average mpg was 19.
That’s a stock DCLB OR 4x4 with just sliders.

I've noticed a decrease in MPG when our fuel changed over to the winter blend and the morning temperatures are below 32 degrees. I've taken a MPG bit of a hit with some mods but nothing drastic. I am thinking when Spring rolls around I will start seeing better MPG. I've got a really short commute and sometimes get stuck in traffic which affects those MPG read outs as well. It might be worth doing MPG hand calculations to make sure the readout is accurate.

I noticed , but for some reason I can only pull up my last trip. To be real , I don’t even have my maps working or anything. SD card etc I haven’t read that part of the owners manual. I just use WAZE on my phone anyway.

    Like, so many.
I can get 17 on the highway and 13-14 in the city with mods. I live in a hilly area.

I don't know what data the ECU uses to calculate and report the miles to empty, but it would make sense if it looked back at your running mpg and extrapolate that into projected mpg starting with a full tank. Seems like your computer believes you drive in a way that results in 13 mpg. (280/21.1). 390 miles make more sense as that would be about 18 mpg. But I think it is considered empty when there is still a few gals left in the tank. 2-3 maybe.

The mpg the computer displays, either running total or instant is not 100% accurate. It's based on MAF along with fuel/air blend, but there are so many other things that go into this such as winter gas, loads, wind, hills, stop and go traffic it's near impossible to make accurate forward predictions.

So use the manual calculation method at fill up to get and accurate mpg number and the displayed mpg as a rough guide. Mine is always about 1 - 1.5 miles off with the computer displayed number always higher.

Sounds like the smaller motor and all the years of tech improvements since 2009 haven't done a thing for mileages? My 2010 DC 4X4 4.0 V-6 gets 15 city and 18 highway with 16-point-something the average. The highest ever was 20-point-something on a road trip. Well, it is a truck!

Yeah the low fuel light comes on with 3 gallons left. I find the computer display to be extremely accurate at fill up, always hand calculates within + or - .1 - .2

All I've ever owned is trucks and jeeps. So, I've never known what "good" gas mileage is. I typically don't pay attention to it. I drive it, gas gauge needle goes down and I fill it back up. Rinse and repeat.

Drove a rig over 1 million miles on my DAC report. GPS is my brain. Up to date traffic information isn’t though. Lol
