Each insurance company does things differently. USAA only covers up to $5k in mods, so if you need more you have to switch. Others allow you to insure a stated value, so if you say your truck is worth X amount they will give you a rate based on that.

USAA also adds "off-road" coverage automatically to any 4x4 vehicle. Most other insurances only add it by request.

Ok so here's an explanation for the 5k coverage for mods from USAA.

Off Road coverage ????? “ALL ACCIDENTS HAPPEN ON THE ROAD” Everyone repeat that 10 times. If you forget, repeat the above stated 10 more times.

We shall see......the USAA rep is looking into it. Funny thing, when I asked about the coverage for aftermarket parts and off road coverage their first response was "Did something happen?"

I haven't modded my truck yet, but when the time comes I'll have the actual vehicle value covered.

Maybe they word it differently? Because I was told that my vehicle would be covered if used how intended. So if I was on a OHV trail or anything that would be under intended use, as long as I'm not racing or in any sort of timed competition.

I'm guessing the rep I had just used the term "off-road" but it's not actually worded in the coverage like that. This was a few years ago.

I assume they would at least let you take off any usable mods so that you can transfer them to your new rig. For example skid plates or camper shell.

I'd think that really depends on if they own the vehicle because it has been totaled.

And never assume with these sort of things, get clarification.

30 years in the collision industry, the last 15 with a major carrier as an adjuster. if you dont fully tell your insurance company what they are insuring, they do not owe you for the replacement of non oem added on accys. ie: wheels, tires, electronics, toppers, body kits etc... it is called extra equipment coverage. some companies have a default coverage, knowing people will add on items, some dont. but, if you dont, expect the possibility your add on items, may not be covered in a loss.

protect yourself, and your investment, add up your add on's, then contact your agent, and ask how to proceed, to cover your investment fully. your results may vary. Ski

I think it might be that USAA covers your vehicle no matter where, as long as the incident occurs in the United States. I think other companies state that the incident must have happened within 100ft of a road, or something like that.

    Excellent informative and concise.
If I were to ever require the services of a company in that business, Mountain State Overland would be high on the list just because of how the man conducted himself.
Drama free and intelligence is unfortunately not all that common.
