Bootcamp is part of macOS so has no cost associated with with it, but it carves out a permanent (until you remove it) chunk of your drive for the Windows partition. You have to decide how much drive space to allocate to it at the time you install Bootcamp, and once you do it's a royal PITA to change.

Parallels costs money, but since it's a virtual machine manager, your Windows installation is basically just a file sitting on the macOS filesystem. You can dynamically change the amount of disc space available to Windows with Parallels, which is handy if your needs change. If you decide to get rid of it, Parallels is much easier to uninstall than Bootcamp is. Parallels also has some nifty cross-platform functionality that Bootcamp lacks.

Be aware that both require a licensed copy of Windows to work, so if you don't have one on-hand you'll have to buy that as well.

 

It looks like that’s just the desktop shortcut.

Parallels has generally been better than VMWare for the Mac. Benchmarks are normally better for Parallels and the features are more mature.

 

I disagree 100%. I started with parallels back in the day and moved over to vmware. It’s been much more stable and has had better driver and pass through support. I use fusion on a near daily basis.

I couldn't get the tactrix cable to recognize on a VM I had. Local machine wasn't getting the pass through on the tactrix. Running a Windows 10 VM on an Unraid server, which is Linux. I assume it was a driver issue and support for the tactrix may have been limited on the platform I was attempting.

It made more sense to me to spin up a VM on a server and try to tie my OV license to it instead of my laptop.

 

If its a VM then its a VM... I think the license would move with the VM and not the hardware the VM is running on.

 

That was the idea. I just couldn't get the tactrix to show up. I guess I had that wrong in my prior post. The tactrix wasn't being passed from local machine USB port to the VM. I will admit I don't know much about the virtual USB drivers for the VM I was using. I figured remote into VM on my laptop so I could use any laptop in the future.

 

Just curious. Is your server on wheels, or were you planning in using a long USB extension to connect?

I could be wrong here, but I don't think the license software will play nicely like that?

Note that @OVTune allows you to request upto three REG files for other System IDs. I thought our old laptop was going to be more or less permanent, but I got a surprise upgrade. It was very easy to get another REG file.

Oh that. I thought you meant the connection type in general. I was skeptical it would work since I needed it stable to write to the truck ECU.
