The Lair

So my steering rack is going out again. It’s leaking fluid where the steering shaft inputs into the rack. Same place the last one failed. This will be my third time replacing it, averaging one rack a year.

I ain’t even mad though because it comes with a 3 year warranty, so it’s free each time.

 

You're going to be so good at changing it, it will be like watching a NASCAR pit crew.

 

I am good after doing the job twice now. Second time it only took me 3 hours. This time I bet I can get sub 2.5

 

It looks like your truck is leaning so at least add one to the other side. And the asymmetry is fucking with my OCDness.

 

It's definitely leaning hard driver side. I'm going to lower my passenger side in an attempt to level it out. Maybe tomorrow.

 

Just add another light over there damnit!

 

After getting in contact with Rock Auto, they don't want to send me another warranty replacement. So I'll take the refund (~$450) and sell my lightbar and buy an upgraded Tundra rack. They're much beefier and should last me quite awhile.

 

You're in a real pickle. Steer well during the day or steer really bad day and night.

Yea, that's all well and good until my CFO started reviewing the statements and asked what some of my big money charges were. I forgot about the sliders I ordered from Joe/Randy and she was ready to call the bank because it didn't say Mobtown.

 

After doing more reading on the install, I don't think that's something I want to deal with. Looks like a royal pain in the dick. It's already tight in there as is.

 

Is the Tundra version cheaper than an OEM Tacoma version?

 

Nope. $1000 from a guy on here who makes them, or $1500 from solo motorsports. An OEM rack is ~$700

 

Are you destroying them off roading? Also, and it's been a while since I asked a really dumb one but.......how come I never see any steering stabilizers on Tacomas?

 

I think it's more so that I was running a cheap rack and it couldn't handle the abuse. I think a factory rack would be fine with what I do. I found one seller on ebay selling an OEM rack for $590 so I'm going to hop on that like white on rice.

Just bought an OEM rack via ebay from Longo Toyota to the tune of $628. Fingers crossed the OEM rack holds up better than the reman rack. I have a good feeling it will.

 

My memory serves that ToyotaPartsDeal was always a "Gotcha on the back side" site. Not the first I've heard about them.
