Shocks are tuned differently. You looking for a stiffer ride? Going over terrain quicker? More travel for slow speed obstacles? Just a cushier ride? What’s your goal for the ‘upgrade’ to improve, exactly?

Budget? How much can you realistically spend (including installation and alignment)?

General questions get general answers. Extremely specific questions get exact answers. Whatcha need, homie?

I would guess it would be a slightly stiffer ride .... I guess something for around 500 dollars that would be better off-road than stock shocks and there would be no stress on anything mechanical ( cv boots etc ) .... just take old stock one off and put on upgrades

5100s stated above will be in your price range and intended use.

6112/5160, worth the extra cheddar and effort.

If he’s looking for a firmer ride he may not like the feel of Digressive valving over progressive. I have 6112s on my 4Runner and they make for a more wishy washy tide the faster and harder you go. Just my .02.

You could go the Dobinsons route, keeping the original springs and everything else in place. Much beefier than stock, but offers a great ride without adding stiffness, just better response to the terrain.

    https://exitoffroad.com/product/dobinsons-pair-of-rear-shocks-for-toyota-tacoma-4x4-2005-2020/

Both are available in yellow or black color.

If you want to spend the money, you didn’t mention your budget, you could do Kings and get a great upgrade. Without turning them up, Kings don’t really lift it much (maybe level the front is all) and you have some thread that you could turn them down to keep the factory rake if you really wanted that.
