I don't usually bother; once you get a little snow on the ice there's plenty of traction. Early season fishing (pre-snow), or after a heavy rain has glazed everything again I might throw a set of YakTrax on over my boots but even that's a fairly rare occurrence.

So I have 3 different methods for all different conditions. If it's glare ice and it's cold and dry I have Muck boots that have these special little pads that grip to the ice amazingly well. I love them but the ice needs to be dry with zero snow: https://www.muckbootcompany.com/products/mens-arctic-ice-short-boots

If it's glare ice but it's a little warm or there is water on the surface I will wear flat creepers because they are more comfortable: https://www.fishusa.com/Stabilicers-Heavy-Duty-Ice-Cleats

If there is any snow on the ice at all I wear these, they are really my goto for all conditions if necessary. They don't take up much space in my tackle box and they fit every type of footwear I own: https://kahtoola.com/product/microspikes/

If I were to only have one to rely on I would get the microspikes. They are awesome. There are a lot of cheaper knock off brands that can do the job, but plan on buying as many of the knockoffs as you would the real thing because they break. The Kahtoola brand don't break very easy. The downfall of the microspikes is they are pretty uncomfortable on glare ice all day. Hence the flat creepers with screw studs.

I highly suggest wearing them. Maybe you have heard of the Meredith Rotary Ice fishing Derby in NH? It's the largest fishing tournament (either open water or ice) east of the Mississippi, average of about 17k fishermen State wide. Maybe 3 or 4 years ago we had a really warm, horrible winter for ice conditions and people were concerned that if they didn't cancel the tournament lots of fishermen were going to get hurt. In fact that year there was only one death... a 52 year old man that fell on glare ice and split his head open. .

And if it's one trip on the ice and you don't need it to last..
$5 I bought a pair of these for dog walking and very slowly the orange tread buttons can pop out (and be put back in if you find them) but they work over my timberlands for $5.

I keep two pairs of these in the truck for in case someone comes out with me and forgets. They work fine for occasional use.

Literally went from really sunny to dark and snowing within minutes here in RI. Don't think I've seen clouds roll in so fast before. The snow was coming down like little pellets. And it's bright and sunny again.

Same here. Just was outside loading a bunch of E-track in my truck to install in my snowmobile trailer tonight, it was like getting bombarded with pellets.

Appreciate all the input. I only got out a few times last year and still prefer to fly fish but ice fishing kept me entertained last year enough that I’ll be out again some this year. Figured spikes/crampons were a sound investment!

No ice down here this weekend. Low 60s on Saturday, high 60s on Sunday

We're supposed to be in the 50's Saturday, which is why we're getting ice on Sunday instead of snow. According to the weather man it's supposed to cool back down overnight on Saturday, but still be warm up higher. He said that it'd be 6-12 inches of snow for the whole state if it wasn't for that, but instead everything will be crusty and there'll be a lot of accidents and power outages.

    Same.
I'd be thrilled if it was for snow. I was hoping for a good snowfall yesterday, but we just got a dusting.

I got it all from Amazon. 4ea 8 footers, 6ea 5 footers and 2ea 2 footers came to right around $260 shipped. I couldn't find any 8 footers local to me, Harbor Freight and Tractor Supply only had 5's and 2's. I want the pieces to be as long as possible because they will be stronger and actually make the trailer stronger.

Wait, how's it my fault? I can only be blamed last year for a lack of snow because I bought my sled last year. This year all I have done is flash the ECU and some clutch work:devil:
