First post for me so don't be too cruel :). I currently have a 2018 ZR2 and am experiencing the dreaded transmission shudder issue common among the recent colorados. I took a chance going from the tried and true Toyota reliability for the ZR2 but will likely be going back, especially now that the Tacoma FINALLY has power adjustable driver's seat. Frankly, I'm a little scared off by this tranny issue...

My biggest concern with the OFFROAD is the ride on the pavement. While I do go on the trails and beach, 80% of my daily driving is on the pavement, which is what the ZR2 was so awesome in offering a planted, stable ride both on and off road. Any advice, input, feedback from current offroad owners on my concern? I did test drive yesterday and felt decent, but definitely not up to par with my current ZR2. Thanks!

If you are just looking for a little more on-road comfort you could always upgrade the factory shocks.

Why not a TRD sport if you are concerned about on-road ride.

Take the offroad for a test drive, put it in cruise on the highway and see if you like it.
Whatever your driving you should enjoy it, and not compromise.
The Tacoma is reliable, if you like the drive then go for it.

I think it depends a lot on your car ownership background... having driven mostly Toyota trucks/4runners my whole life, with a short stint in a Forester, I think the new Tacoma drives great. It's got that typical rubbery but solid body on frame type of feel on the road, but I like it. Car reviewers seem to hate it.

As for transmissions, I like the 6AT that's in it... some hate it. Whatever.

It's a great truck overall. Only complaint I have is the diff howl which can be excrutiating on long trips.

Sorry, I am a little confused. If par is better with a failing torque converter and the other major transmission shortcomings, I am not sure what you are asking? Seriously, I like my tacoma l, but if a truck with a failing transmission rides and drives better, I would not be switching.

I’ve had 6 3rd gens, the AT is more than fine especially after the TSB in 18-19. It’s overblown here as an “issue”.

My 2020 Off Road seems just as stable as my 2000 4Runner or my 2017 SR5. It does ride like a truck though (so did the T4R and the SR5).
