What the heck is this squealing noise?

2007 Tacoma double cab SR5

What is this sound? This just started today as I was pulling out of a parking lot. I don't feel any kind of grinding and does not go away if I turn. Initial visual inspection in a parking lot does not uncover anything obvious and this is not the same noise as brake notification. Nothing looks like it is rubbing on anything. I did perform the following maintenance in the last couple months in order with the last one being two weeks ago.

-Replaced Brake rotors and pads
-Replaced front and back suspension
-Replaced left and right sway bar link
-Replaced left and right tie rod end w/ ball joint
-Replaced right and left wheel bearings
-Replaced Needle bearing and seal with one from ECGS
-Replaced Front Differential seal. Had to do this since I drove the first one in to far.

My unprofessional initial thought from hearing it, sounds like it is happening as the wheel turns but doesn't follow the same rotation of the wheel or it would be a faster squealing sound. Could this be CV Axle?

 

Dust shields behind rotors rubbing on rotor ?
I had same sound after new wheel bearing install.
Just a guess. Hope you get it figured out.

 

Thanks @bw4706 , It very well could be that. I do remember accidentally bending the shield when putting things back together. I thought I had bent it back correctly, it has been two weeks since I did the work and was not making this noise till just now. I have a feeling that is not it, but it would be awesome if it was.

 

Does it change in 4WD? Does it change when you're accelerating, coasting in neutral, or engine braking? U-Joints are capable of making some very weird sounds.

In the mood to drop a driveshaft? I know it's not the easiest thing in the world, but it's not too hard either. You might learn something if you remove it then drive around in 4HI (front wheel drive Taco). If the noise does go away, shaft is already out for the subsequent U joint and carrier bearing job.

 

On my way home I tried a few more things. Keep in mind this is a rotational squeak.
- It makes the noise turning and going straight.
- Messed with the brake shield a little but no change.
- When accelerating it continues and the rotational squeak gets faster until it "warms" up and then it stops. Can't reproduce until it cools off.
- I did put it in 4 low and high but could not hear anything but likely cause it was already warmed up. Did not try nuetral to coast or engine brake but will have to wait till later tonight to try those things.

 

Yikes! Wouldn't know the first thing about how to do that. Big undertaking I would think. Crap hope it doesn't come to that.

 

Give us some more details on the one I put in bold. What parts did you use? How did you install them?

9/27/19 - 124,710 - Passenger Wheel Bearing only (Took it into Carpenters Auto). Didn't have my tools to do it myself do to recent move.
10/24/19 - 124,768 - Suspension replaced and leveled (Les Schwab KYB Gas-A-Just Struts)

I have my truck in the garage now. Letting it cool off then gonna jack it up and turn the wheel by hand see if I can get it to make any noise. If not I will then go and do some more driving troubleshooting that was mentioned by @andrew61987 and anyone else that might have other things for me to try.

 

Personally, I'm not a fan of anything Dorman. Absolute bottom feeder parts. Lots of shops put Dorman parts in though because they can say they put new parts in (and be telling the truth), charge you for premium parts, but put cheap crap in. I'm not saying it's the Dorman bearings, but I'd certainly be listening in that area.

 

You know, I really hope it is something simple like that. I will report back my findings later tonight. Thank you all for your help thus far.

Ok, I got the truck jacked up and did the normal testing for bad wheel bearing and it comes back good. No movement in either the right or left tires, no unusual grinding noises outside of the pads rubbing on the rotors. Each tire has a good 3.7 seconds of spin before they stop. I don't hear any grinding coming out of the CV Axle rotation points. I took tire off and am able to rotate the wheel by use of the lugs. Unless there is something else to look at, I am going to put the tire back on and see what other configurations the squeal happens on.

 

Before I put the tire back on, I bent the shield back a little since I know I had accidentally bent it when I was working on the Needle bearing. I did not hear anything all day when driving so hoping that is what it was.

UPDATE: It has been three days since I adjusted the brake shield and still no noise. I am thinking that was the issue.
