    The grass is always greener...

    Don’t get a pickup.

    Just my opinion.

unless you spring for a TRD with tech/prem at $40k your still gonna be disappointed but sounds like you don’t need a truck so I wouldn’t too many people use them as image vehicles

The guy currently drives a BMW and a Lexus and you're warning him about "image vehicles". BMW's are the epitome of an image vehicle. The quality sucks but they look good (I've owned a couple BMW's).

OP, if you like the image of the Tacoma, then get one. All of these people act like you have to abuse your truck off-road or hauling freight, otherwise you're not using it correctly.

    However, I would recommend a V6 4x4 for it's utility and resale.

I was just reading an article about older people who are fueling a resurgence of model car building.

    Interesting.

Maybe OP should try and find a pristine 80’s Toyota 4x4 that can satisfy his desire for a truck and keep the vehicles he likes to daily drive.

I really don’t understand this current fascination with pickups.

The current variety trucks are basically “dressed up” utility vehicles ffs.

Why would you buy a mid size truck and all that’s associated with it, extra maintenance (4wd), decreased mpg, etc. and never use it? Not to mention OP said he wants a luxury interior, not gonna get that in a Tacoma. When I say image I mean those that don’t need a truck but want to present an image of they do. BMW is more about look I can afford this over your Camry.

Huh? My wife's BMW has been fantastic, only about 58k on it so we will see what the future holds but so far so good.

Anyway, to the OP, if the BMW and Lexus fit your lifestyle I'd keep those, it's always cheaper to keep what you have. I've considered trading my truck for a 3 series wagon with a manual but I can't pull the trigger yet.

That is how the market works. The sales models and MFG'ers would die out if they didn't create the desire (and fads) and folks just hung on to their stuff for 20yrs. That 3yr swap cycle drives the industry.

On the pickup side, I sort of see it as the full size have gotten so over the top in all aspects that paying a little less for a reasonably sized package may be driving the growth in the mid-size market, which in turn is driving the desire.

I do agree that most pickups have gotten very soft, as have SUVs. I appreciate the raw edges of the Taco and some of the sacrifices for off road and hauling.

This is my first pickup and will likely be my last when I retire it 20yrs from now. :D

The same reason you'd buy a BMW over a Toyota Camry, because you like the way it looks and it's features. Sure, it costs more, but if that's the form factor you like, then that's a perfectly valid reason.

I’m taking about perceived image, not content or features. “Look I drive a truck, I’m handy, rugged, listen to Florida Georgia Line and camp and sh*t” when in reality I never leave pavement, work in a cubicle and maybe use the bed once a year for mulch at Home Depot.

    I owned a 2003 BMW M3 (Imola Red) and a 2007 BMW 335i (Something blue)

I loved the M3, but at 23 years old, it was getting me in trouble. Aside from that, I had very good luck with that car and loved it. Bought it with 47k miles and sold it around 75k. The 335i on the other hand was a pile of crap. It spent more time in the BMW shop than my driveway. Granted, it was a first model year of the latest gen, but the fit and finish were aweful compared to the M3. My father has also owned a few BMW's and between the rattles and malfunctions, I'd probably never buy one again. All that aside, I do like the "feel" that you get when driving a BMW. Very connected to the road and plenty of power.

Yeah, you see, that logic just doesn't make sense to me. A vehicle is allowed to be a "fashion" statement. Otherwise, why doesn't everyone on TW drive a silver or white Tacoma? It's the most utility based color, unlike Inferno, Voodoo, Cavalry, etc... whether you like to think of it this way or not, it's an image vehicle.

If I have to drive a vehicle and I'm not struggling with paying for it, of course I'm going to drive something that I like the "look" or "image" of. By your logic, if I work in a cubicle, I should drive a Prius, because it's the most commuter friendly car possible. My logic is that if I've got to be stuck in traffic commuting to work, I might as well like the way I look and feel in it.
