With that said, is the better of the Off road apps, Gaia?

I use Gaia, haven't paid for pro yet, but you can completely pull it off with downloaded Google maps on your device.

All Trails is great too, don't have pro for it either hahaha. Have you found it worth the cost?

So far yes but I think it's more hiking centric rather than off road centric.

OnX has an off roading app, I had their hunting app premium and it was excellent.

Make sure she's fully stocked up on snacks, laundry is done, anything to help while you're gone for the day just to make life easier? I dunno, I don't have offspring :notsure: Hope you can make it!

That tentative map was drawn in Gaia so I'll probably map the "official" route in that and share it. That way you can download it and can use it if there's no service anywhere along the way. I've never shared a Gaia map before though so I'll have to figure that out.

I use to use All Trail Pro but then I found the TrailsOffroad website and when scouting routes I use that most of the time now because of the pics of waypoints and videos so you can actually see the terrain. I start with TrailsOffroad and then jump to Gaia to actually plan the route. I love Gaia because of the different layers you can turn on/overlay on the map. I also tried OnX but maybe I just didn't get it or something, it didn't seem as comprehensive as I would've liked.

That's why I mentioned Gaia, if most people use it and the ability is there to share routes as files between users then that would be the most beneficial.

I downloaded the Gaia app but I'm gonna have to go pro on it because I can't just look at that one white layer all of the time, haha..

Yeah, I used Gaia for all of three days before I got the Pro version and it is so worth it. Toggling the layers definitely had a bit of a learning curve though. Now I mainly use the Satellite, USFS Roads & Trails, National Map, and Shaded Relief with various transparencies. I also have the MVUM (USFS) and NatGeo Trails as backups with a couple Topo's as well

Will the Tierra Del Sol event affect this run at all? I keep reading multiple times about narrow trails and passing issues on this planned trip

Is this the event you're talking about? https://tdsdesertsafari.com/ It looks like they're sticking to Salton City and outlying areas, so we should be fine, we're a ways west of that.

Come on over! Lots of good people in here willing to answer any question you might have about HAM.

Just a heads up, in case you didn't know this already, but using your Baofeng on FRS and GMRS frequencies is technically illegal.

To operate on FRS you need a radio that is certified for FRS (Boafeng is not). FRS is limited to 0.5-2.0W depending on the frequency.

To operate on GMRS you also need a radio that is certified for GMRS (Baofeng is not) and are required to have a separate license that is $70 and lasts 10 years (no exam). GMRS is limited to between 0.5-50W depending on the frequency.

    Cheers
