Alright TW - i'd like to hear your thoughts on this potential trade.

I just paid off my truck, and have been excited to start dumping $$ into mods. But it seriously nags at me that I dont have 4WD. I may move back to colorado in a couple years, so I started looking at tradeins. I really don't want a new car payment though. It's been nice not having one.

Well i found a good deal on a 2013 access cab, 6' bed with 83K miles. My current taco (2011 DCSB) has 144K. All in all i'd be in about 5K cash to make the trade. I compare that to 3K to convert to 4x4, plus all the additional miles.

If this were an AT, i wouldn't have asked. But i read a lot about 6 speed issues in the 2nd gens. Personally i love driving stick, but don't want to lose the reliability i have already. SO - if you were in my shoes... what would you do?

I’d rather dump money in to a stock 4x4 than convert a PreRunner.
But I’ve dumped money onto other trucks in past with mods.
Now, I just dump money in to maintenance and use what I got.

Sorry I can’t be of more help. Either way, you should have a nice truck.

That $5k will get you 4wd plus a two year newer truck with updated front end right? Also 30k less miles. That 4wd will probably yield you an extra $2-3k when you sell it in 10 years. Also a modded perfumer is going to be hard to sell.

For me deferring some upgrades to get an objectively better vehicle is a no brainer.

Yeah if you want 4wd then do the trade. Seems like a decent enough deal. There isn't anything wrong with the manual transmission. Often they do get a throw out bearing that chirps, that doesnt actually effect the function.

The trade is worth it imo... What is your time worth? With that many miles, there is bound to be some maintenance items to address as well that could put you over $5k anyway.

I hate truck payments, probably more than anyone here. That being said, for me a nice orig. 2013 4X4 would be way ahead of a modded 2011 Prerunner. If you can trade for 5K & not spend 3K for installing 4X4 on your prerunner, it looks like you traded for 2K, plus you'll have an orig Taco instead of something that's been put together. Not a question, that is a great deal

Thanks for all the responses guys. It made sense in my head but it’s good to hear everyone’s thoughts.

I just bought all new shocks, coils, and leafs that arrive today. I think it definitely makes sense to go drive this thing and get the offer before I install that stuff. If I do pull the trigger, the build starts immediately!

I don't know your situation, but if there will be pymts. NO< NO< NO< "PAY IT OFF FIRST" ASAP, then start the money spending, I mean mods. Nobody but the bank will ever spend the interest you hand to them. Pay it off, then YOU can spend what you don't give them. Heck it's yours as long as you don't give it away.

Yeah so I went and checked it out. Truck looks good buts it’s a salvage title and the dealer was a little shady.

Doesn’t feel right so I’m going to keep on keepin on with my prerunner. It’s not like it will lose a ton of value with another 10K miles.

I would have passed too but now that you have mentally taken the step to wanting a 4wd one, I'd start looking harder. If you are serious about moving to CO, 4wd is a no brainer. When I lived there up in the foothills, I couldn't even get out of my driveway in the winter without using it and that was in a locked 4runner on 35in mt's.

A double cab PreRunner to an access cab 4x4 is a downgrade in my opinion

you’re right. I had this truck in Denver and it was crippling in the winter, but I worked from home. I will need 4x4 when the time comes.

that being said I have 2 years. I’m going to enjoy the extra cash flow and start putting some cash aside for a down payment or maybe buy a 4x4 1st gen. Who knows. But I’m going to keep my eyes on the market for sure

What 6 speed issues are you reading? I occasionally shift clutchless and its never given me an issue. I also heel/toe downshift every time to slow down. I have heard that the synchros can go out but I think it's because most people don't know how to rev match properly. I've owned 2 tacos, one 1st Gen with almost 200k on it, and my current 07, both with v6 manuals, and not had an issue besides a creaky clutch pedal.

Not sure man. Access cabs just don't seem worth it to me. I'm not sure what your preferences are which is why I stated my opinion and completely respect yours

I just realized you said it's a salvage... Yeah just keep looking and saving in the meantime. Love my 07 access cab, and especially love the MT.

If you want to do the conversion you will learn a lot for the price its minor to get it swapped out. 4x4 is no brainer if you wheel it.
