what wire to use for amp turn on/off signal wire?

I have a 2015 2nd gen. ive got the stock head unit. accidentally bought the incorrect taco tunes wiring harness for my amps. what wire and where would i use to provide the signal to turn the amps on with the radio? i realize its typically a blue wire with aftermarket head units. thank you. any feedback appreciated.

 

If you have the non-JBL system, you want to grab the thin grey wire in the main 10-pin harness. This is the radio’s accessory turn-on wire. In non-JBL systems there’s not an amp turn-on sure in the factory harness so the grey accy wire will be the ticket

 

Any 16 gauge speaker wire will do or one that is turned on by the ignition if tapping

 

thanks! i assume that is directly behind the head unit? would a t-tap be acceptable?

 

Not ideal honestly. It’s a very thin wire and t-taps will damage and break the copper strands. There’s only a few in there so breaking any of them isn’t good.

you can also get a signal from the cig lighter. This is much thicker if you absolutely need to use a t-tap.

 

is there enough slack to cut and solder? or quality crimp connects the way to go?

 

A good ole military splice is my preference. I don’t like to cut factory wiring if I can avoid it. There’s enough slack to work with it. I have a cordless soldering iron so I can do solder work in the dash pretty easy, but it’s tight if you have a corded unit.
Get a fresh razor blade, shave off ¼” of insulation, poke your new wire through, wrap it around 2-3 times, and tape it up. No damage done, easily removable

where is this thing grey wire located? ive checked behind the headunit and at the fuse panel. cant find it.

 

Trial and error, I would try to find the accessory wire.

no thin grey wire in my 10pin. there is a redish pink wire that is switched power in that 10pin.

my reason for sounding like i wear a helmet in the sandbox- that is the correct pin on mine. BUT.... my wire is a light brown, not grey. thanks again for the photo help. without that i would be lost.

 

so thats the wire ive always been using since my install. year and a half it worked fine. had a solenoid making my fuse panel switched power, completely independent. it quit working. replaced with an 80amp relay. hasnt worked right since. dedicated 4g wire from battery to amps. any ideas?

 

does that thin wire get voltage when the radio is on?

 

yes. cant understand why the amp and sound processor dont switch on and off. they just stay on. never used to.

 

Does the remote input on the amps get hot/cold when the radio goes on and off? If the remote input on the amps is staying hot, something got mis-wired somewhere. Might be worth just running a new wire from the radio to the amps and call it a day
