Ya I got pretty upset and got up to leave. The salesman changed the subject real quick.

PS: The event DID happen just a couple days before. Someone pulled out in front of us. Had to stomp the brakes to avoid an accident.

I was beating him up fairly good on the trade. He was looking for more angles to tear me down. I was extremely surprised that he brought it up though. Just proves what they can see.

That is not a name that I would choose.

But, he has written / produced some of my favorite stuff. I don't hold Hollywood in high regard, but I do like to be entertained.

Not a Tacoma, but this seems to be only thread which discusses Toyota's data collection.

Recently bought a new 2020 Toyota with TSS 2, got a email 1 week later from Toyota Insurance Management Solutions "TIMS" that they will be soon be offering insurance discounts for my new vehicle, and at the bottom of the email it says..

"You’ve already opted-in to share your vehicle driving data. And your new car is equipped to transmit data such as how fast you drive, how many miles you drive, longest drive, and shortest drive. So, all that’s left to do is drive the way you normally would.

After 13 weeks, we’ll be in touch to let you know if you may qualify for a discount on an auto insurance policy. It’s as simple as that."

    https://toyotaims.com/faqs.php

I never signed any paper or did agreed to anything in UI that allowed this data collection, Toyota just decided they will track me and will sell that info to insurance companies.

To make it worse when you call the number on that website, they can't disable the tracking for insurance themselves, they will send a mail to another department which will request stopping tracking, they said they will get back to me in 24 hours, it's been 3 days now and didn't hear anything from them.

If you call regular Toyota customer service they have no idea what Toyota Insurance is and they can't stop or disable data collection by that department!.

I'd be willing to bet you missed the fine print. You should request a copy of how you opted in.

She said the dealer *might* have turned it on. I paid cash, so only had few documents to sign, I was in and out in 45 mins, I never signed any document about TSS or Data Collection or ANY Toyota agreement.

    I'd request a copy then.

Have you downloaded the Toyota app? It is in there that you have to agree with the services to take advantage of the features.

I would say that is true for the pre-2020s, but the 2020s and on the Connected Services do not need a personal smartphone to communicate.

I tried to get clarity about this with Corporate, but after several emails and three phone calls, they got the model years all confused. It was funny as they spammed me for three days afterward for feedback on the assistance provided. Given the earlier effort, I chose to just delete them.

I'll embrace this as it'll save me money by never wanting to buy a brand new truck/car. Thanks big brother for saving me from impulse buys.

Some of this goes back to GM's OnStar debuting in the 1990s. And, some of it is part of all 3rd Gens. For example, my pre-Connected Services 2017:

I assume you avoided the accident...wouldn't that make you a safe driver, and the car salesman a raging dooshbag?

Yeah I think almost very modern car records "near-crash" events on to their "blackbox". It doesn't record everything but only start recording as soon as there is an extraordinary event like hard breaking. I assume it only records the last even and overwrites the previous ones. There is a section for this on the owners manual for tacoma. I am more surprised the salesman was able to access that data that easily.

Might as well keep it and enjoy what it offers if you’ve already gone through the setup. I believe this is just part of the 1 year free service you get from Toyota connected services. While you could view this nefarious, I doubt anything will come of it. They’re just trying to “sell you” as I’m sure they get a kickback from insurance companies if they sign you up for reduced insurance.
