Race radios at a great price!

Found this radio which has just been discontinued. They're on blowout at a number of retailers. It's programmable from the face. No software required to run it. Receives on all race frequencies and requires one simple mod (MARS MOD) to transmit on race frequencies. Power output is as high 75watts and it has great reviews. Should be $180 shipped if you're in California. Plus the cost of an antenna. Check it out! Way better than CB

That being said, I don't think Robby Gordon is a licensed ham radio operator. Just use common sense. You're dealing with a higher class community. Don't use ham frequencies and if you talk to someone on the ham frequency, be polite and vacate the frequency.

 

I won't argue with you as you are 100% correct. That is the law. You must have a license to operate on 2M.

Hell get a license than. To all of you without a license, you might just enjoy being an amateur radio operator. It's a fun experience and useful for offroading.

 

Agreeed. These are ham radios and designed to operate on ham frequencies. It is actually illegal to modify these radios to transmit out of band. If you get one and plan to use it outside the ham bands, just be very aware of where the ham bands are and avoid transmitting there. Ham radio operators make a hobby out of finding illegal transmitters and can track you down in a hurry. Not to mention, the FCC fines if you get caught transmitting somewhere you are not supposed to be are very steeeeeep.

If you want to use a 2m radio take the couple days it takes to study and pass the test. its not hard and its not expensive.

 

On that note...

Kartek has a list of race frequencies posted on their website which are out of the ham band and are common to racing. Nonetheless a license is still required if you are to be safe and legitimate.

The icom f121 radio I use requires no modification to operate outside of ham bands.

 

This thread should be locked. Suggesting people illegally buy, modify, and operate a radio is violation of TW TOS.

This is the radio I plan to put in the scout when i finish it. that extra 25W over a dual bander can make the difference in an emergency.

I'm looking at buying my first HAM radio and this would go in my Taco. I'm also planning on getting my license of course. Would this radio be a good mobile unit?? And would it be a good first unit??

IIRC - the 'race freqs' that these guys use is a license that is granted by the FCC just like the plumbing truck or the tow truck guys... The organization is licensed and the members can use it. I have never heard a 'hook' or a plumbing truck ever do a station id, so... I am sure you can just go to the fcc website and find out about freqs that are used by SCORE etc and I think you will know what you need to know.

Can be preprogrammed upon request after purchase or you can buy the software online. I have the software to program my radio. The radio I listed in my first post is programmable from the face without software.. (if you do the MARS MOD).

As far as I know their are no privately owned frequencies. Public property bitches. That's like saying this is my air and you can't breath it. Whatev

 

Thats not what I was asking. I was asking PRS and MJP2 about Ham licensing on race radios and intercoms.

 

The MURS mod (Mars mod is for Martians only) - there is a 'soft' mod that can be done with those radios that can be done at start up but has to be done again after any power cycle.

Umm okay. I didn't see that anywhere in your question but maybe I can't read.

 

I guarantee you would pass the test if you can read the pool questions. I studied no longer than about 2-2.5 hours and passed with no problems. Hit me up and I will get you the goods if your interested.

HAM is by far, one of the best tools you could have in your truck! As long as you can hit a repeater, you could actually patch in a phone call or call 911.
