I do have a tailgate lock but it's stupid to rely 100% on electronics so it's stored there in case I need it, like if the battery dies or something. I keep all my roadside tools in the bed of the truck.

I actually had to look at my truck handle to see if there was a key hole, I've never used it. But yes that would be a good place to store the spare tailgate lock key.

Rock Auto had the rear bumper end caps you could check with them as well.
Still new in the box and will be for sale when I get time to take pics and list them. Tree I backed into persuaded me to get a real bumper. :frusty:

Today's thieves carry tools they stole from someone's garage or work truck. Sad to say but locks and such just keep honest people honest.

AMP Powerstep, UC Flex, bed lights, Opt7 Tailgate bar, black tailgate lettering Pending: re-configure tail light,s custom storage pocket bags, pinch weld painting, blackout badges, ......
Back up plans are always good to have since electric/electronic controls can fail.

I am assuming you drive a stick so you do not have to rely on electronics.

Out of curiosity how did you handle the other electronics in the truck that should probably not be relied upon?
    A few failures like...
    • Power windows
    • Light controls
    • Air bags
    • Starter
    • Ignition coils
    • ECU
    • If AT the TCU
:boink: Just teasing a bit.:rofl:

My point is there are so many electronic controls in these trucks we can not prepare for all of the possible failures. Despite having an electric tailgate lock I keep the tailgate key securely stored in the key fob.

Unfortunately, Toyota did not think to key the tailgate the same as the door until the 2017+ models. It is so common for vehicles to have different keys for passenger and cargo areas Since 1970 or so. o_O
