    hi
i've been working on a 01 tacoma for about a month now. i bought it not running, and looking like a pig lived in it. the other day i took a key blank i had to a buddys house and cut it on his key machine. i knew it probably didnt come out great but went home to try it. well when i put it in it didnt work. it would go in but not turn. i did not try forcing it just pulled it back out. now when i put my original key in, it will turn to accessory but i cant turn it any further. so i guess my question is does anyone know what i did? does toyota ignitions know when you put the wrong key in the ignition and lock it from starting? so worse case scenario how hard is it to remove the lock assembly and have toyota get you a new one? like i said it wont start so i cant take it to them, and im an hour away from my closest dealer. any help would be appreciated. i did search the forum but i didnt see anyone else with the same problem.
    thanks again

Is it possible you have a valet key and not an ignition key? have you tried to see if the key opperates the doors, is it maybe nto the right key at all?

I have changed the ignition on a older s-10 and it was not bad. You just have to have the right tools.

how are valets supposed to drive your car to and from a parking spot if they cant start it....

valet keys typically dont open up the trunks of vehicles.

you tell me. I bought the truck and they gave me a "valet" ket that does not work in the ignition but opens the doors.

no its not a valet key. ive started the truck and drove around the yard with the same key. as far as wiggle the steering wheel ive tried that. the key will move from lock to acc. so it does unlock the steering column and turn the radio on. i just cant get it to move to on and to start.

The original key is worn out. Go to the dealer and have them cut a key using the factory code. I had a similar situation happen last year, my original key (I bought the truk new) stopped working, would not turn the ignition switch. I went to a dealer and had a key cut using the factory code, problem solved. I never knew that keys would wear out. Lesson for today.

well the answer to the question is, i had bent tumblers in the lock. when i put that poorly cut key in the ignition it bent some of them up. i ended up pulling the lock out and taking it apart. i actually eliminated two of the tumblers. i put it back together and all works well now. thanks for the advice, but this one is solved.
