This is true. Hams can only operate on ham bands. To operate on gmrs bands you need a gmrs radio and license. Separate deals. Cannot be crossed.

As I ham, I officially don't care. Don't cause interference. Be conscious of what you're doing. 5w on a handheld is like being upset with someone with a water pistol.

With that said, I always highly encourage anyone who wants to have real super coms to spend $15 and take the 35 question test. I will personally help anyone and do whatever I can in aiding a person to pass. It's a great hobby and a very useful tool.

And no, not going to report anyone to the fcc, hi hi.

    Let's be clear:

You should be licensed appropriately to transmit on any given frequency, and power level, and I won't advocate otherwise.

Hardware to transmit on those freqs, and power levels, is a matter of operator compliance.

I'm confident in my licensure and hardware.

Much like vehicle safety and Backcountry survival: You're On Your Own (YoYo) for compliance unless it's just too stupid to overlook. And as @m603holden demonstrates, there are SMEs around here happy to help you do it right.

A cheap Walmart FRS radio will get anyone through this trip for intra-group comms, in 100% FCC compliance. If you want to worry about Inter-group comms than radio geekery just became part of the hobby for you.

    There ya go.

If you feel OK with the stuff in the first test, don't be afraid to peek at the next one. So much cool stuff you can do with both of those. And just remember, you're not supposed to know any of this naturally. Nobody does. Even after I passed the test I was a bit in the fog.

But once you start using this gear on a regular basis it all starts clicking and is easy to remember because you're actually doing it.

I'm not sure what we are doing this year but if push comes to shove I'm sure he'll let us use it again.

I remember doing NMW trips in the 80's with a 2WD Ranger with regular P rated tires - never aired down, no Delorme, no maps and no comms.

I just turned 50...so I'm officially old and grumpy. :D

There was a simplicity to it....but more likely naivity.

    Ignorance can be bliss.
