Cutting wheel won't do it. When you weld there, that will most definitely melt the paint and primer in the area you just welded. How would you remedy that damage?

Or you could put some JB Weld in the head of the bolt.

Cutting wheel might, cut a slit and use a flat head, or cut a slit towards the periphei and use a chisel. Also, They sell a heat barrier gel that works well actually.

Heat barrier gel? That might help the very top layer. The bare metal underneath the primer is what will get hot. Don't trigger me, last time I almost got the ban hammer.

I fully respect your opinion Mr. T. But that shit will not always work. That will not keep the metal temperature down. Again, good for the surface. Underneath will likely be damaged. BTW I legit work at a high end body shop fixing bently, audi, benz, tesla, Porsche.

All I'm saying @Superdave1.0 , is that with basic thievery tools you are not getting my tailgate. Now you pit me against a double triple secured welded glued bolt, and with my garage at my disposal, I'll get it off with zero damage to the truck. But hey, if I need to get it off due to an accident, like you pointed out, damaging the paint ain't gonna be on my list of concerns.

No I have not. Been in the body shop biz for 15 years. Never seen it in a body shop. I've heard about it. Don't doubt it works good. Just not 100% full proof.

No disrespect, but if this is a true statement, then think outside the box a little bit. In 15yrs, you're telling me you have NEVER had to remove a single bolt that had the head stripped out....

The gel is to protect the surrounding area, the base metal can't get hot if the top doesn't get hot  also, I'm not responsible for your triggers.

Fu*k yeah I have. Just did it on my Lexus Gx470 3 weeks ago. The front diff drain bolt stripped like a mofo. I had to weld a socket on top of the stripped bolt. The heat helped it as well because it was seized. That gel would not magically stop all the heat from a welder.

Thats where you are wrong. The bolt you are welding on is threaded into the painted tailgate.

So put the gel right on top of the bolt? Can't weld through gel.

You can, but that's not the point. You need a tack, it's not like you're going full pen on the damn thing lol. You're silly.

Just a couple baby tack welds would work nicely. Keep the heat down too...
