Can anyone provide instructions on how to remove this circuit breaker?

I admittedly never changed one out before and my father in law needs help replacing it. The picture below is all I know about it as I live an hour away and will be going there tomorrow.

Were trying to replace the one with the yellow...



Ive replaced outlets snd installed lighting so I have some basic skills. Any guidance is appreciated.

 

I recently replaced one. I turned off the main power to the panel. Most breakers are just pushed onto the buss bar. You should be able the grab the breaker and pull up one side and then the other. Then remove the wires. Installation is the reverse order. Good luck.

TURN OFF THE MAIN 100 Amp first

Then pull from one end of the breaker that you want to remove. it normally hooks in one end and push to fit in the other end. If you can’t remove that one remove another one that comes off easy to see where it hooks and then pry the one the one that you want to remove with a thick flat screw driver.
DO NOT TURN ON THE 100AMP breaker until you are done.

 

Does turning off the main breaker break the connection to the rest in the box? I see people online pulling out their meters to ensure there is no current.

 

Those breakers are obsolete and would be expensive if you can find one. That panel also has a poor design for the bus connections. I am surprised the breaker didn't fall out when you took the cover off.

If you can find a regular breaker and add the gfi protection with a gfi receptacle.

 

Pulling a meter is not safe for anyone not trained or without proper protective equipment. The power company may start legal action if caught for possible theft of service.

 

Yes. Turning off the main 100 will turn off power to all the other breakers. If you had to replace that Main 100, you would need to pull the meter to do I safely.

 

Gotcha, so what you guys are saying (obviously) is there is no need to do anything further than to turn off the main 100 and just pull out the breaker that im replacing. I have a tester to so i can test for current before touching anything.

Turn the breaker off and pushing the handle outward will remove the breaker. You may need to pull outward to remove the mounting foot on the outside edge.

 

These are Federal Pacific deadly remove the whole panel replace with a new Eaton or G.E.

Look up Federal Pacific breakers on the internet they are deadly and have lost their U.L. rating years ago

On a side note turn off the main and pry back to the side with the handle sometimes a screwdriver has to be inserted into the buss bar to break it loose

 

Negative, father in law said he found one in stock at a local hardware store but hell research it more of course. Either way this has to get done.

 

If you have a multi meter, use it after throwing main and Before beginning work. Just to be Real sure that breaker has no power! I always do this. Safety first.

 

Well once you remove it you can turn the main back on to power the other breakers. This way you can take it with you to match it and save on multiple trips.

If you insist on adding a new breaker go get a Conneticut electric retro to take it's place

The issue with these is they don't trip at the proper amps allowing the wire and buss bar to get too hot in turn melting the buss connection after a few days of sitting there smoldering the buss bar melts to the actual box shorting the main ..... And once again the mains have been proven to not trip then causing the fourth of July in your electric panel

 

He doesnt unfortunately, hes also going through some personal things right now and will be probably selling the house to an investor soon anyway who will ultimately just tear it down. Until then, he needs power.
