Yup! The typical worn out front wheel bearings sound can make you think of many things. But usually they go out around 100K.

I never understood why there is so much slack between that 35mm nut and the crown and cotter pin. You can almost hand tighten the 35mm for the crown/cotter pin to fit.

 

ive never had a vehicle with a bearing go bad. i have no idea how to change them. had to pay a shop so it was a 1 day thing. pricey. drives like a champ now.

 

It’s not that bad a job for the front wheels. That’s if you get the whole hub assembly. The rears require a press, a little more involved. I’ve gone through 2 sets on the front, one in the rear. I do frequent unpaved terrain often though.

 

It’s 4 bolts to actually remove the bearing once u get to it. Real easy

 

Mine went right at around 110K, though had been emanating noise for the last 60K easily, and here I was thinking it was due to my all terrain tires.

That's because the cotter pin is the last line of defense on making sure the axle nut does not back off. If for whatever reason it works itself loose. It's just a backup plan it's not an integral part of the design.

It really just is. I saved my hubs and pressed out the old ones and pressed in the new ones. It was worth it for time saving purposes, of course I would had preffered to had preffered to replace the entire thing.

 

My first thought was the winter tires too for some time until doing some research. But yeah I think once an axel nut gets loose the wheel bearing prematurely starts to go bad.

 

Well yeah, I agree, that's a good way for a wheel bearing to go bad, but if the nut is torqued down either to spec, or tight enough it should never be an issue. Like I've legitimately never seen an axle nut on ANY job where we used the impact gun come back to our shop because it came loose over time and we have done tons of axle shafts in the past.

 

ive got the tech guys #. i should ask if mine was loose and part of the issue.

 

Did you do any front end work before? Or has it been all stock up to this point of the wheel bearing failures?

 

Okay need some advice. I am getting rid of my bully dog tuner may use just as a gauge. So I contacted two Toyota dealerships and they have no clue what I'm talking about when I say I want a trd tune installed. One said they can try and alter the bully dog tune on the ecu and the other said they could order the calibration kit. Is either correct or is there actually just a trd flash. They both said there's no such thing but according to everyone on here there is. I'm new to to this.

 

There is actually a TRD S/C flash. In my experience experience, however, Toyota will be unable to install it until/unless your ECU is returned to its stock (NA) calibration. (TechStream confirms the NA calibration ID before flashing. If it's not found, which I don't think it will be once the BullyDog tune is installed, TechStream won't flash the ECU.) Pretty sure your best option is to invest in an HP Tune setup.

 

As @Norton mentioned. HPTuners is really the only way to turn a Bullydog flashed ECU into a TRD tune.

The dealers use software that does not have the flexability of the aftermarket flashing tools/software. I can explain why if you’re that interested, but the fact is, HPTuners can do what you’re trying to do (and much more).

If you’re looking to simply go to the native TRD tune, you have a few options. You can buy the HPTuners MPVI2 (~$299) and four universal credits (~$200) and you can do this yourself or give me a shout and I can walk you through the process.

Or, you can send me the ECU and I’ll use my MPVI2 to flash it for you. This way you can save the expense of the MPVI2 and only be out ($250 + a few bucks for priority mail shipping)

is our traction control fully off when we push the button and the indicator light with the skid marks appears? seemed the truck held back timing or something. was in a controlled course experimenting with breaking traction. i had a hemi charger that even when you pushed the button it still managed some form of computer control. if thats our case too can hp tune correct that?

 

It doesn’t turn off just pushing the button, much like your Charger. I believe holding it down for a few seconds disables it, but I’ve never really tested.

Yes the traction control can be tuned.

I know it's got multiple modes/settings, but I didn't think it was as advanced as what you find in new sports/muscle cars like @White lightning boosted's Charger, or my GT500 and C7Z. I look forward to learning more...
