Pealing Clear Coat - What to do

my clear coat was shot on all the flat surfaces and in some places it was down to the factory primer coat.. I looked at a wrap... minumum $500 for a small area. I looked at various You Tube videos about color sanding and re-clear coating it myself in the driveway... too much work. I checked with paint shops in my area, San Diego... and for them to even consider the job they are estimating $3-$5k. I too had questions about the quality of paint, everything in California has CA/FED EPA concern and is water based, some single stage some 2 stage. I was talking with a buddy whos friend has a shop in Tijuana, Mexico. $1300 for a complete paint job. It is a decent paint job... a 5 footer if you know what I mean, is the masking the best, no, but she isnt going to rust away on me. I had to look on a map where Amarillo is... too far for you to take her to Mexico just for paint.

 

I got with a local reputable body shop and they quoted me $1100 for the roof, the hood, driver door (which is significantly peeling clear coat) and passenger fender. That’s me stripping it all down so that all they would have to do is sand/prime/paint. I have painted my grill and all four of my wheel well plastic and it wasn’t all that hard. That was rattle can and I did a pretty decent job. I think all I would need is a decent size garage, the proper spray gun/paint and air compressor , a bit of practice and I think I could spray my whole truck. I took auto body in school (back when that was a thing)

 

Thanks, I’m happy how it turned out. I would recommend paint brush over roller or otherwise it can have zebra stripes. I don’t believe it mentions anything about being UV resistant, but the one year reviews appear that it hasn't faded. I've accepted I'll have to eventually touch it up or give it a fresh coat. Plus the lower quarter panel shouldn’t get too much sun compared to the roof of my topper that does have it.

Nope no electric antenna unfortunately, had to unscrew it for the carwash the other day.

Raptor liner could be a good choice because you have more options on colors.

 

Looks pretty good for $1300. It gives you some protections.

 

Reading for ideas on my '05 Tacoma with a peeling roof.....I've been seeing quite a few Tacoma's around town with roof paint issues.....

 

Just run tighter trails. The tree branches and shrubbery (and, ideally, rocks) will help remove the flaky clear coat.

Then get a can of rattle can clear coat and have at it.

 

I'm going with Monstaliner, in a silver that matches closely with Lunar Mist. Have samples on order.

not once have i noticed my black paint doing anything like this, and i do park it in the hot & humid sunny cornfields, but i do try to find shady spots when possible in the summer because the interior really bakes

it looks like there were chemicals or something spilt on your truck

 

Just the Southern (or Western) sun will kill paint like that. My vote is to just look harder for someone to paint it at their house with you helping in tear down and possibly sanding so he (or she) doesn't have to spend forever on it.

 

I drive to work. I live in NC but work in Louisiana. Wind velocity will slowly cause it to do that. I hate how it looks. I’ve painted the fender flares and the grill. I think if I had the time and some time to practice I think I could knock it out. If I ever do it myself I’ll take it apart and change the color to that darker grey on the third gens and 5th gen 4Runners.

 

If you are planning on keeping it for a long time or “forever”, repaint it. Save the money and do it when you can. I plan to pass my ‘18 down to my 3 year year old daughter when she is old enough to drive. Already saving for a paint job because I know how Toyota paint goes

 

Nice. Similarly, I have a five month old, and my dilemma will be whether he gets the '19 4Runner or the '05 Tacoma when he is old enough to drive.

 

Or you can go all the way giving it that rusty look. BTW the Cement Grey looks sweet on a 1st Gen. Sorry if I invaded the 1st Gen Holly Site. Cheers from a 3rd Gen owner.

Do you have a picture from the back? I'd like to see how that lower black matches up with the back, thinking of having mine painted along with the hood.

Where did the ditch light brackets come from? Looking for 03-04

 

wind velocity, is the wind super bad in that area?
my truck is a highway truck nearly 70% about with definite wind velocity
i have had a hood protector on for over 22 years, maybe that is why my hood does not resemble that pattern IDK
maybe a different clear coat was used

 

I would say that hood protector did a good job and did what it was intended to do. Mine had one when I first bought it and I took it off. Probably wouldn’t look like that if I had kept it on. It’s not the end of the world. I looked online and fully painted oem color match is $300+. Which I’ll probably end up doing being that I don’t really have the time or place to do it. Maybe this time I’ll keep the hood protector/visor on there.
