I am looking to get the toytec ultimate and I am wondering how much clearance I stand to gain? I would also be adding 275/75/18 underneath. How much more capable will I be offroad? Is there any way to get 6" lift and still have as good of a ride as the ultimate?

Clearance to what? There's a lot of shit hanging on the bottom of these trucks, some of it lower than others.

Running clearance is determined by the rear axle, specifically the diff, and is only changed with larger tires. However, without any tire changes whatsoever a suspension lift will improve approach/departure/breakover angles.

Anyway, running clearance will increase by half the increase in tire size. Clearance to most other portions of the undercarriage will increase by half the increase in tire size + 3 inches. A few items, like the LCAs of the IFS, will gain some clearance where they join the frame but remain relatively unchanged at the knuckle/wheel hub (much like the rear axle, their running clearance is only affected by tire size).

How capable you are offroad depends on a number of things, most importantly your skill as a driver. I guarantee you a good driver with a stock truck could get up shit (with some body damage) that would stick an inexperienced driver lifted on 33s.

As you've pointed out, lift and tires will help your clearance. How are your skills at picking lines? Are your traction toys (lockers, traction control) in order? Do you have armor and thus the option to just fucking drag over shit you can't clear or bypass?

    Etc.

Hey thanks guys and I was mainly wondering ground clearance. I use my truck for mostly hunting and stuff like that... I won't lie, its also a mall crawler a bit in the summer months. The only time I really wheel it hard is at our meets, but that's a few times a year is all. I just want to be more capable, and my leaves are sad faces, suspension is very tired. I figure if I'm going to change things, might as well upgrade!

6" lift goes shit for clearance other than HUGE tires. 3" lift you can manage 35's with A LOT of trimming. Tires are really the only thing that is gonna give you "ground clearance". All these lift and such just allow different sized tires to allow the clearance, they do not contribute to adding clearance.

Oh and OP if you are prerunner then the only real way to lift it is Spindles from either Camburg or Total Chaos which provide either 4" or 3.5" of lift! :woot:

Not true. Suspension lifts add clearance to the undercarriage of the vehicle even if tire size stays the same. While this does not increase running clearance, it does increase "useful clearance" by improving breakover angles. The lifted truck WILL be able to clear obstacles the non-lifted truck would drag on.

However, true running clearance is indeed only added by upping tire size.

Prerunner??? I live in Montana are you serious!? I don't know how the 2WDs here manage!

Oh hey there Lisa... Figured you would find me. Have you visited the other thread I posted tonight? I am sure you have lurked it anyway.

    A) I am in fact mainly a mall crawler for about 320 days of the year...
    B) I never claimed to have attended 500+ meets, but it is the only time the urge spreads over me to wheel my truck, as it is my only vehicle, I am in school, broke, therefore afraid of damage...
    C) Hello Lisa, glad you could join us

I wish someone would explain to me what that meant... I am pretty sure it means "solid axle swap", but WTF is that!?

I could never. I was raised better than to take advantage of someone like that.

What I meant to refer to was the pumpkin. A rear lift does nothing for diff clearance. :) Yes a front lift will give you better clearance

It's never as simple as it seems. Even leaving aside approach/departure/breakover angles, suspension lift gives better clearance in the front.

The height of the stock front undercarriage is the same height as the bottom of the rear diff - nine-to-ten inches give/or/take.

But the rear diff is only in the center of the truck.

So an unlifted truck will whack a 11" rock no matter what, unless you put a wheel on it.

But the lifted truck raises the front center undercarriage to, say 12" Now, the rear axle isn't any higher as a result of the lift. But you can clear the 11" rock on the rear axle as long as you go left or right of it - and don't line it up directly with the pumpkin.

So yeah, a suspension lift increases undercarriage clearance, even without using the bigger tires it gives you clearance for.
