2015 Frame Inspection/ Recall?

So I recently brought my 2015 2nd Gen into my local dealership (Toyota Town London, ON Canada) for an error code (p2440,p2441) and schedule a service to have to that looked at, and 2 days after my initial visit they called me back saying that my frame is under recall and they need to keep my truck for a week to “replace the frame”! So I did some research and reading of threads on TW and had to call them back for more information. After calling the second time the story changed slightly. Now they are claiming they need to inspect the frame for rust and if it’s bad they will replace the frame entirely and if not will just apply the CRC. I’m very confused why I cannot find any information regarding frame recalls on my Tacoma (2015 limited). I have searched my VIN on Toyota Canada website and NHTSA database. All the recalls seem to be on 2010- older. Anybody able to enlighten me here? Anyone had a 2011- newer been through this procedure?

 

I just received my letter for inspection. If they find rust holes in your frame they replace it otherwise they coat it in some black crap that is supposed to seal your frame and send you on your way. I am sceptical about the coating as I feel it might trap and accelerate any rust on the frame leading to failure down the road when you are out of warranty. Curious to see if anyone regrets having their frame coated.

 

I think on our 2015 trucks it depends on where you live, regarding frame recall/inspection. I have not received anything from Toyota for mine.

 

It's not a recall. Toyota calls it an extended service campaign. You will get a free frame coating and additional 12 year from in use date extended frame rust through warranty if no rust through is present at time of inspection. If a dime size hole is found on inspection Toyota Corporate will pay dealer to replace the frame and all parts required at no charge to you and provide a free vehicle while being serviced.

 

You bring up a good point. I would also like to know how well the frame coating does, long term.

 

I got my notices in the mail from Toyota a couple of weeks ago. I have an appointment booked for the frame inspection/undercoating for the 20th. I'm dropping the truck off and they keep it for 3 days if all it needs is the undercoating. They're giving me a rental while they have the truck. Apparently, they will do the inspection, if it passes, they pressure wash the frame, then use some kind of frame dryer to completely dry the frame, then they apply some type of waxy undercoating. How long this extends the frame warranty is a little ambiguous. The notice says that the frame will be covered for 12 years from first use. I've been told that means 12 years from the date of purchase. In my case, I'll have frame warranty coverage until 2026 after the undercoating is applied.

 

Rust belt/snow areas require pro active rust prevention by owners. Road salt, brine and road deicing chemicals can and will destroy steel in short order. Rinse undercarriage well after such harsh exposure. Pressure wash/degrease undercarriage before winter and apply Fluid Film or Wool Wax. Hose rinse when temps permit. Repeat annually wheather you get dealer applied CRC or not. Stay away from rubberised or tarlike coatings like ziebart.@e_smith43500

From the get go I’ve been skeptical about this CRC, I’m even more sketched out by the way my local dealership feeds me information, first calling it a frame replacement, then frame reacoating, then saying they will inspect it first and make a determination. From the first phone call with the dealership they said they would need to remove the box and cab of the truck and they would keep the truck for 5 days. This leads me believe they were going to CRC the frame no matter what condition the frame is in. Being a 2015 I doubt there will be any dime sized holes (even living in the road salt capital) but they seem to have already made a plan without having seen the truck, I just get sketchy vibes from this place. Maybe I’ll switch stealerships.

 

I would call some other dealerships and see what they say. I had to call three dealerships before I settled on this one. One dealership told me they'd do the inspection on one day, then they'd have to 'order parts', as if they wont have the undercoating system in place for the 100s of Tacomas that are going to need this service. The second one told me all they could do was inspect the frame because Toyota hadn't 'approved' the extended service campaign. When I told them that I was holding a letter from Toyota that said otherwise, they didn't seem to know what to say. It seems like some of the dealerships are trying to do something funny, I'm guessing they want to charge Toyota for, at minimum, two appointments, but I'm not sure.

 

I'm going to the dealership tomorrow morning for my frame inspection. My truck has been undercoated since new, so I'm hoping a new frame isn't needed. Makes me nervous to think of all the new squeaks and rattles that might be associated with a major job such as a new frame. Our local dealership is pretty good and I've heard that they have no problem addressing any issues that arise after a frame replacement. But I still don't want to be stuck there on my days off getting tiny things fixed or problems looked at.
Sounds selfish I guess. I should be thankful that Toyota is offering all this to me for no cost, but I am hesitate.

 

Re: Tacoma frame rust. 1995.5-2000 Toyota bought back and crushed. Paid 1.5% of purchase price. 2001-2004 free frame replacement if rust through. If NO rust through-Free treatment and 15 yr extended frame rust warranty.
2005-2017 12yr. extended warranty on frame. Free coating or replacement. Certain conditions apply and dealers may not have latest treatment or approval for gen3 extended warranty. letters have been sent to owners in designated snow/ ice areas stating you will be contacted for treatment when it is made available.

 

I live in Utah, I guess we aren't included in the recall. Toyota should give all owners the 12 year extended frame warranty regardless.

I painted the minor surface rust on my frame with rust convertor spray paint, and then used Fluid Film on my suspension components. I don't think it's a good idea to spray anything like Fluid Film or CRC on the frame without first fixing any and all corrosion. Although, if you aren't going to fix the corrosion spots properly, anything is better than doing nothing.

 

I used Corroseal rust converter inside box frame top coated after with FF. Corroseal top coated with Rust-Oleum then FF for accessable areas. So many don't even rinse road salts off. This will never end if owners aren't proactive.

 

If it's a wax type creeping sealer I will get it done. If it's an asphalt type I won't as it'll just rust under the goop and cause faster rust through. I have a 2015 also and I received the second letter on it a week or so ago, I don't take it out in salt season so if I get it done, it'll be in the spring after the salt has been rinsed off roads by rain.

 

Me too, my truck isn't my daily driver and I haven't driven it since it started snowing here, the roads are covered in salt. I do miss driving it though, but I'm planning on keeping it forever, so the sacrifice is worth it.

 

I have to drive through salt water at solstice tides and storm surges to get home.

 

So your battle against rust is year round, that would be tough.

 

I just received my notices as well. Inspect and if good then coat. I'll let them have a look.
My 04 1st Gen had the frame coated by Toyota in 2007....frame was perfect when I sold it last year.

 

2015 in the Salt Belt of Massachusetts, been Fluid Filmed since new and still looks new. Fluid Film is amazing stuff, these are my Kings through a Winter with Fluid Film still look new to me.
