3rd Gen Reliability experience from owners so far

Ordered a 16 right as the hit the lots. I have an auto, but so far it's managed to side step every issue. love all the features it has and how Toyota kept it simple. I've had to change my driving style a bit to a bit more relaxed, but as far as reliability it's solid. Just understand the possible issues going in and you will not be disappointed....or you will. To each their own

 

17 MT - 98,170 miles. Zero issues.

only time it went to the dealer was the 2 free oil changes.

 

17 Sport with 40k km and zero issues. It’s done everything the same or better than the 05 it replaced..
couldn’t be happier.

 

Very true, im on my second windshield, which is cracked already. 20k km on truck.

Never had issues like that on any of my other vehicles. Arent all new vehicles windshields are thinner these days anyway?

Thank yall for the VERY helpful posts! So good to see that Toyota still puts together a good vehicle. I'm not going into it thinking it will be perfect, as these days NO vehicle will be perfect but its comforting knowing there's such an active forum such as this for support or advice if need be. It will be a few months before I can pull the trigger on a Taco but when I do, I'll be sure to post some pics! Thanks again everyone and God Bless!

 

The only issue I have with my 18 6mt Sport is the stupid groaning clutch pedal. At about 7k miles the whole pedal and clutch m/c assembly was replaced under the old TSB, at 14k miles it's groaning again, a little high temp brake grease cures it for a while, but I'm letting the grease wear off for now and dealing with the noise until I bring it in as there is a new TSB with an upgraded pedal. And there was a TSB for the radar sensor weather seal, no big deal there.

It's not a perfect truck, but it hits the right spot for me. There's nothing else in the same price range I'd rather have.

 

17 TRDOR MT with 33k miles. Only a faulty weeping rear main seal replaced at 16k miles. No issues in drivability or reliability. Neighbor has 2 3rd gens and has about 400k between both of them. Very reliable vehicles when taken care of.

17 DCLB OR AT. 29k on the clock 2.5 yrs of ownership.
No issues other than I was not happy with factory gearing. Swapped in 4.88 gears and I’m happy. Towed a TA Enclosed trailer from Denver to Central Florida mpg’s took a hit during tow but you have to expect that.
Would of been worse without new gears. I do have sumo springs on when towing to help out. Every day mpg is 18.9 combined after gearing.
No CEL since I drove it off the lot.
Paint is not the greatest. Probably a light single stage that does not resist chipping at all. Even after paint correction and ceramic coating. Glass is glass and every rock hit on a windshield is different, some crack it and some don’t. Full coverage insurance in Florida means new windshield no deductible.
It’s a great truck and I have no regrets other than buying a black truck. She looks good though when clean.

Flawless.

 

Had a 1978 Pontiac Acadian for a while. Great little car. Acceleration sucked!

 

Which model Honda? Might be trading the Accord (2012 V6. zero issues) in on a new model.

 

Mines a lemon
By 38k miles I’ve had:
Rattling window switch (bass)

Rear fuel pump noise - intermittent

Stereo locking up/ resetting

Bt stereo song selection fail - needs update

4x4 glitch - front actuator failed

Front window seal defective - noise

Adaptive cruise fail, intermittent, dealer hasn’t been able to verify

Bsm fail, intermittent, LH sensor “out of adjustment” one dealer wouldn’t fix because of lift, one because of a scuff on the bumper that happened 10,000 miles before it acted up — thankfully it fixes itself in heavy traffic

Driver’s visor rattles when swung out

Alignment—- continual problem, it doesnt drive straight from the factory

Tire shake after first rotate - fixed

A/c stank - failed fix - engineer recs never use recirc.... seriously?

Intermittent Brake shimmy - front?

Intermittent hard crank/ no start

Tailgate bushing fell off


Loose headlights - “normal”

Rear diff howl - “normal”

Shotgun seat stitching came loose

Battery leak- fixed!

A/c drain hose - reinstalled (had come into the cab and leaked onto the shotgun floor)

Wheel well cover flapping in wind -fixed

Rear upper door seals adhesive failure -fixed! After 3 dealers, one whom told me to glue it myself (roll eyes)

Bed leak — told normal (the seams aren’t sealed)

Tonneau weatherstrips at fold points - failed. Told the tonneaus just leak

Gears are crunchy/notchy/balky, esp 1&2 - smoothed out with wear

Hood alignment and glue failure- fixed, came back, but then wrecked truck so oh well

Vibration in 2wd after lift - fixed with ecgs bushing


Exhaust rattle/tin over bumps

Noisy shifter linkage — rattles over bumps - told normal

License bracket offset - now broken (dealer fail)

Clutch stick cold - normal

Odd powertrain pick-up, shudder/jerk/rah rah rah at 1500rpm, told normal, laughably told to never shift truck below 3,000rpm - OVtune helped, but not fully

Hellacious grinding at full lock left, unsolved before accident (maybe a rock)

Rear shocks blew out on Mojave Road, they wouldn’t warranty it, so lifted it

4 flat tires, not the trucks fault of course


Toyota has been pretty terrible about fixing anything. They’ll use any excuse, especially off-roading an off-road truck, to not warranty something

Still, i love my adventure lemon. And am hoping to get some upgrades out of my recent cliff-diving accident
