    Hey guys,
I'm trying to figure out what this rattle is. Do you think it could be engine mounts or transmission mount? It seems like it's coming through the dash when in drive. It goes away when in neutral. Toyota told me I needed a new transmission mount/insulator. What do you think? Thanks! Btw, it seems to be intermittent and shows up when the engine is hot.

Hmm...I had a rattle when i first got my taco, and it was doing it when im on Park or at an idle... Turns out it was the skid plate making contact with my metal frame. The slightest tap would produce the rattle. So i just put something in between and it stopped. Hopefully urs is an easy fix!

Noticed your 4x light was on. Does it do this when in 2wd? Seems to sound rotational but hard to tell.

    4x4 does not affect it.

It's either an exhaust pipe hitting a skid (if you have one) a loose heat shield which is amplifying harmonically under a certain RPM, or it is indeed your tranny mount.

I will check the skid plate. I tightened all the heat shields and used bigger screws to quiet them. As I said, the dealership thought I needed a new tranny mount and the engine visibly moves when shifting into drive so that might be it.

Shot it the dark but happened to mine. There’s two bolts with springs on them that joint the two sections of the exhaust together by the cat. On mine the spring was up against the metal and the vibration resonated through the cab. I just pried it over a little and the noise was gone. Sounded different than yours though.

When the weather clears a bit I'll see if I can find what you're talking about. I have an aftermarket dual exhaust but I think it's stock near the cat so I can check although it does sound like its coming through the dash but I guess sound travels weird throughout the cab so maybe it's what you're describing.

Update: I changed the tranny mount and the sound still remains. The tech that did the tranny mount thought it's just a random dash rattle. I have tried putting pressure everywhere on the dash area to pinpoint the rattle but have not been able to quiet it yet. I do agree with him that it sound like loose plastic as opposed to metal on metal but who knows. Still trying to find it.

that was my thinking as well.

Have someone you trust get in it with it running, make sure the parking brake is set hard, and the wheels are choked and have them put it in and out of gear while you move around the truck. I bet you find it.

That's what I thought. I have a k and n intake. I tightened up all the bolts but the rattle is still there.

Im hunting the same sound, put parking brake on and in gear and had the harmonic buzz coming from engine bay. tightened all the bolts for the airbox to the motor, noise was still there. put my hand on top of the airbox and just the weight of my hand stopped the noise. pulled hand off noise back. so with just a little bit of weight on the passenger side of the airbox from my hand it stopped the buzz. this had me thinking motor mount but im not an expert at these things just thought i would share

Meigldon, I think yours is the air intake. I had exact same symptoms and I also tightened the bolts but that didnt stop it. I put about 1/2 inch cardboard under intake and then tightened the bolts and the intake was then vibration free and quiet. Good luck

I get a rattle if I don't twist the air intake hose clockwise before tightening the clamp on the air filter housing.
