Another rattle I found under the hood. The plastic engine cover. What is the purpose of it except to look pretty? I took it off for now and see if the transmission will drop off.

It helps trap heat and deaden noise a bit. Other than that, it's pretty much just cosmetic.

Mainly cosmetic. Some say it also protects the top of the top of the engine from corrosion by preventing the salt and moisture from directly settling on the engine. But I think the effect would be minor unless you constantly drive on very wet and very salt roads with traffic. I dont think the rad allows much water from the road tp pass behind in and the hood is pretty well sealed.

    I should elaborate:

Many manufacturers design their engine covers to overhang the harness, injectors, and plugs. The Tacoma does a piss poor job at that though. It also has a laughable amount of insulation on the underside of it, so it's hardly practical in any sense. On cars with aluminum intake plenums, it means you don't burn your hands when you lean into a hot engine bay and put your hand on the cover.

My interpretation of the Taco's engine cover is that it is purely a piece of engine dress up for sales and serves hardly any other purpose.

Just another place to put stickers on that you have laying around in the garage.:eek::D

Or if you prefer you can test your paint skills before you start on the outside of the truck.

I kept mine on, have a scoop and water will come and drop in that area. My scoop light bar has helped block some

Noise reduction, reduces water from getting on the intake plenum.

The light bit of padding on the underside of the mostly useless cover makes excellent absorption material for peppermint oil if you're experiencing mice or rats chewing on your delicious soy harness. Just reapply every 3 months and you should remain mice/rat-free.

It's to make you think that you know nothing about engines and take it to the dealer for everything.
