Can you define stock tires? Are you talking size, or brand?

 

Haha. He was over 400' down a side trail that nobody else could to go down. After 100' of winch line, we only had another 350' of straps, so he had to back up (two bends) and try to avoid the ditches that had running water about 3' deep. It took a while to get him out. He's locked on 35"s, and definitely experienced, he just went too far down that trail, and then a blizzard came in.

 

Yeah, I want to run a tank and a relocated air coupler, but for now I pop the hood.

 

I'll be honest, I either go out with one other guy or myself, so I stick to trails I know or where I always have a plan B & C. With the snow, I had a girl I've been seeing, a trail slightly wider than my truck and a 150' drop on the left that was a canyon. Butt clenching the whole time, and that was on a trail I knew better than I know the taste of my favorite beer. Your experience just sounds agonizing. If i may ask, why did he go down? Usually I get out and walk with markers and heavy pole to test. Glad he made it out!

Size and sidewall mainly. Stock tires are generally going to be all season and not have the sidewall rating necessary for frequent offroading. The occasional fun trip won't put much wear and tear on them, but if you're in a position like we are where you want to go out frequently regardless of terrain and not worry about puncture or popping a bead then you need something beefy.

He'd been on that trail numerous times before. This was our first time there, and the two others had been there as well, but only in the summer. It was actually our destination that took him down there, he was just having too much fun, and went too far ahead of the rest of us.

@OneGiraffe and I commonly go out alone (even in snow) just in my truck, but we taker our time, and know the limits. I also have a winch, recovery boards, hi-lift, straps (many, including a tree-saver, shackles, and snatch-block), as well a a legal Ham radio (we're both licensed).
We're commonly given a hard time about doing this alone, but we're so close, and typically decide last minute and just head out to the snow.

Which usually gets me a jab in the ribs.

Fair enough. Just wanted to make sure. Obviously you guys are more experienced than me, but getting stuck in the snow sucks as it's hard to read the terrain and traction is poor. Again, glad you guys made it out safe!

It was legitimately the best/worst trip ever. Quite the workout going up and down that stupid hill with recovery gear. I considered the fact that I didn't have an all out panic attack a success and we stopped at a bar and had drinks after

 

All good recoveries end that way.
