A few questions about this first. Deep sea fishing? Surf fishing? Fresh water fishing? That kind of info is going to change the answers a lot.

I was in the same boat as you a couple weeks ago. Watched a ton of videos on youtube and picked up a pole and some gear from Walmart, went down to my local lake and caught a bluegill (after 3 hours )

As said above, what type of fishing? I love going on boats. Yellowtail fishing is fun and needs a big set up. Piers can be productive but are mostly slow. That requires a different set up. I love fresh water fishing but dont get good freshwater fishing down here. We go yp to mammoth twice a year to get fresh air and catch a bunch if trout.

Cerritos Park Lake. Corner of Bloomfield & 195th. Caught a 3.5 pound bass the other day there

The season starts after last week of april, ends in october i think. Anywhere from bishop to bridgeport, all of mammoth lakes and all the nearby streams. I love convict lake, rock creek lake, lake sabrina, and owens river(including pleasant valley reservoir). There are thousands more to add to the list. You can youtube for spots and youll find some cool stuff. You need a super light set up out there. Tiny sensitive poles with 2-4 lb test line. We kill it with worms and salmon eggs,
