When I was still designing/thinking about my camper this was a consideration. Build the bottom and stick a drifter on top. Or match a flat bed utility body and a drifter together.

Yeah, Drifter w/ the utility of a flat bed is still my dream. Nice work on your camper btw, was just reading through your build. That's impressive.

A drifter utility bed would be rad!
Thanks for the kind words on my camper. It's a fun build to do.

The only issue that's directly related to the drifter is the width of the bed platform. For myself and my wife it be fine, but considering we have our dog that only weighs 25 lb but sleeps like a hundred pound dog it's something that we have to address. We knew that it was going to be something to deal with going into the purchase and we have ideas on how to fix it, and it's nothing that's really vagabonds fault. Aside from that it was just incredibly cold and we left a bunch of our standard camp compliment at home due to not traveling with a shell in the lack of security on the way north to pick up the drifter. I'm confident that we'll be able to make the drifter work to our needs and it's going to be a rad camper.

    Just the basics
One trick I've been doing a few years to help with cold temps is to boil water and then put it in a stainless steel single wall Nalgene with a neoprene sleeve. Use it as a hand warmer or body warmer. At night place it between your legs to warm your femoral arteries.

What does everyone use for a mess kit? I'm considering a Harbor Freight Apache box or something kind of similar from a hardware store

Somewhere in the teens at night. When we got up we'd been awake for about 45 minutes walking around and getting ready and when we finally started the truck it said it was 20°.

Actually we were out there in the cold and I remembered that you had posted up that exact same recommendation. Unfortunately we didn't have a Nalgene.

I read that, and we will be buying it.

My wife and I used this Joytutus 12v blanket this past december camping in Bridgeport CA. It got down to 15F, we slept in the open bed of the tacoma, on top of a 2 inch foam surface, then the 12v blanket, then in our regular summer flannel sleeping bags, then a large wool blanket on top of all of that. We had the blanket plugged into a yeti 400 on low all night (about 6 hours run time), it drained the battery to about 65%. We were toasty warm. It worked a LOT better under us like this rather than above us - rising heat is a beautiful thing :)

Edit: I should add that this blanket has a 45 min auto shut off. I don't know if that can be disabled but it was not such a bother. So on the coldest nights, it would get cold after a while and one of us would flip the switch to turn it back on. Not sure how many times we did it, I remember doing it once, I think she did it once as well, on the 15F night.

I think most folks have been happy w/ the 0 Degree Double Wide Teton Sports bag with the liner at 0 degree temps w/ socks and sweats on. If you need additional heat, Fashy makes really good hot water bottles. Or you can just use a disposable water bottle, just make sure you put it in a plastic bag and wrap it in socks. An sojoy 12v electric blanket can serve as a supplement as well.
