Traccontrol or lsd in 4wd?

I did read your comment. I was simply making note of the specific bit of information you may have been looking for. A video was also posted that may help.

 

That video is a little misleading because it refers to all of the modes as “LSD”, but it is great otherwise.

 

Meh, it's a video from a random dude on the internet, I was more interested in watching to see how the truck performed than what he had to say.

 

I’m not sure which bit of information you are referring too. None of it explains to me my experimentally observed differences between TRAC and LSD. I know how VSC works and don’t see how it could be interfering with TRAC in these scenarios because the truck is sitting still with no yaw.


BTW, I can’t stand VSC unless I’m driving in rush hour traffic on the freeway in icy conditions. I call it the “fun police mode”.

Question. Which wheels get power in 4wd? I have a 99 Tacoma sr5 4x4. I can lock the diff but that’s not needed unless I’m really stuck. Just want to know which wheels to put my chains on. Mountain passes are requiring drivers to have chains regardless of 4wd or AWD. Never needed chains until drivers started getting reckless and making troopers enforce it now! Thanks for any replies.

I really think TRAC and AutoLSD are the same in their 'strength' despite some anecdotal evidence. They may not be the same on OR/Pro vs all the other trims (due to elec vs vacuum), but I believe they are the same on a given trim (from my bench testing).

However note in 2wd vs 4hi the combinations of Trac and VSC are different

2wd
VSC ON, TRAC ON
VSC OFF, TRAC ON (autolsd) - short press
VSC OFF, TRAC OFF - long press

4HI
VSC ON, TRAC ON
VSC ON, TRAC OFF - short press
VSC OFF, TRAC OFF - long press

So notice in 2wd, you have an option for TRAC ON while VSC is OFF. In 4hi you dont get that as an option.

Does this possibly explain some of what you are seeing?

 

No I don’t think so. It’s a common occurrence for me to be parallel parked on a street where 2 wheels are on dry pavement and 2 are on snow/ice. TRAC doesn’t seem to do anything in these situations, but pressing the LSD button does. I’m going to go out and experiment some more.

2wd of course. I wouldn’t be using the LSD mode otherwise. It’s a bit simpler to hit the LSD button in these situations because the majority of the road surface is dry pavement. There’s just ice/snow up against the curb. Short press to turn on LSD mode; not a long press to disable everything. I use the long press when I want to have fun.

edit: my guess is that Auto LSD mode allows less difference in wheel rotation speed than TRAC. TRAC is intended for loss of traction at higher speeds whereas Auto LSD is for getting unstuck. It’s a bit confusing though, because I have experienced TRAC kicking in when accelerating from a stop light.

I forgot to experiment with this last night when I was out messing around in the tiny bit of snow we got.

 

If you only have two I would put both on the rear.

 

I’m not sure I understand the question, because the answer seems too obvious. With the risk of telling you what you already know, 4wd means 4 wheel drive which means all 4 wheels receive torque (with some exceptions).

 

Is that for the "traction control" only, or also for the TRD-OR's "electronically locking rear differential"?

 

Traction control is entirely separate from the electronic locking rear diff (apples and oranges)

Traction control is software driven, actuating the brakes on any slipping wheels so that power is routed to the wheels that have traction.

The rear diff lock mechanically locks the two rear axle shafts together using an actuator on the differential.

MTS, Crawl Control, Traction Control, "Auto-LSD", "Trac"... all of these fall under traction control.

 

Just asking for clarification due to the previous comments about "these trucks don't have LSD, it's all brake-actuated 'traction control'"..... the exception is the TRD-OR which DOES have a locking rear diff.

 

Correct. The ORs have both a locking rear diff and traction control.
