Tire Size Suggestions/1st Gen

I have a 1998 Tacoma Limited. It has 31x10.5r15 on it right now. I'm going to put new tires on it, but I'm not sure what sized to go with.

If I go with 33x12.5r15 how much of a lift and backpacing will I need. I was also considering not going too much bigger and trying 265/75r16's but I'm not sure.

At the moment I have Daystar 1 inch spacers in the front.

 

Keep it stock, is my suggestion.

 

Honestly, gayest advice I’ve ever heard.

 

So you have a 15 inch rim(wheel). A consideration is your braking power as it currently stands. I have a 96 TACO 4x4 which I upgraded the brakes and rotors on because i did not like the way it stopped, it seemed slow. It still is not to my liking but if larger brakes are to added a 16" rim(wheel) is required which means I would have to upgrade both tires and rims to put larger breaks on it. So if you are happy with how it looks and breaks I would leave it alone and go with what you have. If you have the $$$$ and want to upgrade your breaking now is the time to do this and then purchase your new wheels and rims. Good luck, Woodcutter

With the 1" spacer, a 265-75-16 is about the biggest you could go. 33's are gonna need more like 2.5" of lift and cutting/trimming the pinch weld area.

 

I have an adjustable lift. About 1.75" in the front. AAL in the back. I run 265/75/16 with the OEM Tacoma/Tundra wheels. Very slight rubbing at full lock on the inside but not bad enough to warrant trimming or spacers. Stock brakes. Stops like a pickup I suppose. So my tires are roughly a 32". my stock size on the door is 30" I believe.

 

you can fit 35's on a stock suspension, you just have to cut more than you would otherwise.

Also keep in mind that most lifts don't actually prevent a tire from rubbing when the suspension articulates, it just won't run in a parking lot, which I guess is good enough for most bros.

Putting a larger, fatter tire on, it WILL rub somewhere. Spacers might prevent it form rubbing the frame, but will make it rub (wore) on the fender wells. A good way to get 33's but minimize the rub is getting a 255/85r16's; a skinny 33. Because they are more narrow, you have more options as far as trimming and wheel backspacing. IMO avoid wheel spacers if at all possible. If you're getting new wheels anyway, just do your research and get ones with the best possible backspacing for the tires you've chosen. Spacers are just cheap bandaids for the most part.


But I'd suggest searching around to see the thousands of others posts on this subject to see what people have done to fit 33's.

If you want 33's I would suggest 33x10.5 for a 15" wheels and 285/75 for a 16" wheel.

32's are great as well in either 32x11.5 or 265/75.

31x10.5 are also very capable with a small lift like you have.

I've run all of these sizes and they all did well, just depends what you want out of your truck as to what size works for you.

255/85/16. Fits great, are slightly bigger than 33s, uses the stock wheel and you can fit them with only beat down the pinch weld a bit.

 

What are you huhing about made sense to me

Zero rubbing anywhere. Only suspension modification is 1/2” front lift from Bilstein 5100 shocks.

 

I like your build for sure... but your fenders are cut at minimum in this pic.
Stock, truly stock... no way.
