Hey everyone I'm looking for first hand experience and input on any off road / AT style tires that have been used regularly on icy road conditions with good results. If you spend a good amount of time driving on ice or snow please let me know how your tires perform.

I live in Alaska where the roads are basically solid ice for 5-6 months a year, and I would like to find a good tire that I can run all year long. My old Jeep used to swap into Bridgestone Blizzak's during the winter months and I had great success with those tires, but they're very expensive and are designed specifically for winter conditions. I'd like to know if any of the typical all-terrain tires perform well in winter conditions with our trucks so that I can run the same tires all year and avoid the headache of having to swap out tires every 6 months.

I'm currently running the stock tires that came with the rig when I purchased it in November, and I just can't get any traction on these winter roads unless I'm in 4wd. It really doesn't surprise me with stock tires, but I want to see if anyone has found good year-round results with A/T tires in any climates similar to mine. Hopefully I can find some good off-road style tires that can help me avoid running 4x4 24/7 in the winter time.

Like you, I ran the stock tires for the first season but I didn't trust them enough to push them a second season once they started to wear. I now run a dedicated set of Cooper Discoverer M+S in the winter and am very happy with them. In fact, once the stocks are finished I'll be running these Coopers all year.

The blizzacks will be tough to beat with 5 to 6 months of ice.
Lots of AT tires are fine in snow but suck on ice.
I'd pay the price for safety and stick with a true winter tire.

Thanks for all the input. I do agree that it will be tough to beat the dependability of the blizzak.
I plan to upgrade from my stock tires this summer and I’ll probably run whatever I decide on through the first month or so of next winter to get a feel for how they perform. I may still end up biting the bullet on some dedicated snow tires.

I tried running a/t the first winter we had a Tacoma, had Blizzaks installed less than a month in.
They've been great on snow/ice/pavement for 8 winters now, but I'm noticing a bit of spin and ABS this winter.
Next Sept I'll be deciding between the Blizzak DM-V2 or the Blizzak Lt..
