    Hey all,

I have just joined and did some searching here first and I believe I got the answer but to get a peer check:

I have a 2012 Tacoma Sport that is totally stock with the exception of Buddy Built skid plates and Go Rhino steel running boards. I am not an off-roader but I do like the added benefit if for some reason I have to leave the asphalt.

I need new tires and have an opportunity to purchase basically new tires from a friend who is putting larger tires on his new truck at a great price. I have the stock rims and tires (P265 65R17) and his are P265 70R17.

Granted this would be a minimum gained tire height and should not be any wider but that is basically what I was looking for if I ran across a deal.

With everything remaining stock, is there any concern with rubbing going up this one size? And other than my speedometer being off a few mph, any other changes? Thanks for everyone's response.

You shouldn't have any trouble with that size. I've had 265/75/16's on my truck for a while with zero issues. They are for all practical purposes the same height and width as 265/70/17's. But even though they are listed as the same size there are minor differences in overall size between different manufacturers. And tires with aggressive mud tread are a little bigger overall than an AT or street tire in the same size. I've read of a handful of guys getting minor rubbing with that size.

The speedometer will change by about 2 mph @ 60-70. But in my case it is now accurate according to my GPS. I used to be about 2 mph slow with factory tires. And your actual axle ratio will change slightly. Not enough to matter, you'll be about 3.61 instead of 3.73.

Thanks for the quick reply and information.

I had considered that an aggressive A/T tread could be slightly larger than a "normal" A/T tire of the same size. And what is being offered to me would be considered a normal A/T (but better than what I currently have).

While I could just as easily go with the OEM size but with a more aggressive tire that what is currently on it, getting a slightly taller tire that is better than what I currently have, at a fraction of what I would normally have to spend, is very enticing.

Did you ever end up going with the 265/70/17? I just ordered Michelin Defenders in that size, the only warning the guy at Costco gave me is that my speedo / odo will be off a little bit.

    Like, so many.
You won't have any issues. It's a common upgrade.

Not yet. A friend is going to replace his current tires with a larger size in March and will be offering me his (will have about 4k miles on them) for a wheel of a deal. And since I had entertained the idea of going with the 265/70s anyway, I saw this as a "right on time" offer. They are not aggressive all-terrain (Goodyear Wrangler) but that will be fine for the price I am sure.

Please let me know your real life experience once you get them on and feel them out. Thanks!

I had my tires (Michelin Defenders 265/70/17) installed Friday at Costco and they're great, super quite and ride a lot smoother than my previous ones, not sure what they were though, I bought the truck used so I didn't pick the previous ones. The speedo is off a little bit when at higher speeds but I may get one of those Hypertech calibrators down the road.

That is cool. Thanks for the follow up! I will have to let you know my results in March. Stay safe.

rubadub- I got the tires (Goodyear Wrangler A/T) but have not put them on as my current ones are good for another 10k. So they are stored in my shed out of the sun. They have less than 4k miles and the price- $200.00.
