White Rim trail with teardrop DONE!

Completed the White Rim Trail loop towing a T@G trailer in December 19,2019! Three nights 4 days. First night Airport, second night Candlestick and third night Hardscrabble. Couldn't ask for better weather!

 

That’s awesome! I would not be brave enough to try those switchbacks with a trailer

You must be avid hikers to make that trip last 4 days.

 

The longest hike we did on the white rim trail was to the Fort Bottom Ruin.
We only saw 4 mountain bike riders and no hikers.
After we completed the white rim we drove up Mineral Bottom rd and just for fun, we drove once again BACK down the Shafer. We hit Potash rd and headed back to town for dinner at Zax’s in Moab! This picture was the trail to White Crack campground. We drove to the campground to check it out.

Is the RTT for when you two get in a fight and sleep separately?

 

Back up plan was to leave the trailer at Dead Horse Point campground if weather did not permit or if
park Rangers did not allow it on the White Rim, we had plan B.

Nice. How hard was it to pull the teardrop on that trail?

I also want to take my teardrop on that trail, but my only fear is running into another rig from the opposite direction with no room to back up or go around.

 

The truck and trailer did great, the trail was dry and packed.
The truck and trailer are slightly modded so the trail ride was easy. Just take it slow so your trailer doesn't slide or bounce off a steep narrow portions of the trail like the Hogback.
The Tacoma has front and rear shocks raised 2 inches (Bilstein 5100 front/Tuff country rear) Firestone airbags on the rear leaf springs set to 60 psi.
The trailer has a LOCK N Roll hitch and already has nice ground clearance from the factory.
The Shafer has plenty of turnouts. Just look ahead and you'll see them long before so you can anticipate pulling over to let the other pass. On other climbs on the trail like the Hogback, or Hard Scrabble its a lot tighter, I think the towing vehicle should have the right of way. *picture of airbags before Tuff Country shocks install.

 

Does the trailer have any suspension travel? it looks like it has pretty good ground clearance already, but the tire is so close to the fender it doesn't look like it can go up very far at all. Are they the original tires on it?

Looks like you have some room on your hitch to give that trailer a lift...

 

It’s a Dexter Torflex torsion axle so not much articulation for hardcore off roading.
Those are the original wheels and tires in came with from the dealer. I raised the fenders 3 inches to make room for when I use snow chains.
I also moved the spare from the underside spare tire mount to gain a few more inches of clearance.

Snow chains on the trailer?

 

Yes, we use traction devices on our teardrop and horse trailer tires during icy conditions.
We also have a set of snow chains for ALL 4 tires on the Tacoma. **I use Spidertrax spacers to clear the upper control arm**
Here are a few pictures: Sometimes the snow is too slushy or powdery for chains so we keep them off. Pulling a horse trailer near Susanville CA and pulling the teardrop near the Grand Canyon north rim. Both pics with no chains, snow was powdery.

 

Looks like fun! We rode the White Rim on mountain bikes last Spring, the opposite direction, pedaling up the Shafer Trail on the last day. I drove Shafer and Potash a few years ago in my Taco, but would like to go back and drive the White Rim and actually spend more time closer to the river, so 4 days doesn’t sound too long at all.

 

Snow chain question: what thickness front spacers do you use? I assume your KO2’s are 265/75-16’s.

 

THANK-YOU!!!!!!!!!! Someone who actually understands how "chains" are supposed to work. I am soooo tired of people who put a set on their drive tires and then wonder why they're still sliding into the ditch.

 

Kind of a personal question. It looks to me like he doesn’t have any more wrapped up into that that someone with an $80k 1-TON diesel. And the parking lot where I work must have 30 of those at any time. Guess it’s all about priorities. Plus you never know maybe he’s Jeff Bezo’s nephew or something.

 

I use 1.25" Spidertrax on all four. OEM wheel and tire size.
