I had the valve cover gaskets replaced on 3.4l 5VZFE six months ago at the dealership and now oil is leaking again and now the dealership says that it is the rear cam plugs. Should they have been checked and replaced if necessary when the valve cover gaskets were done? Thanks.

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

I'm not 100% sure what the actual service manual says about the actual recommended proceedure for replacing the cam plugs when doing the valve cover gaskets.

I can tell you that it would be completely retarded to go through all the work to get to the valve cover gaskets without at the very least checking cleaning and re-sealing the cam plugs.

If it were me, I'd fight them to replace the cam plugs because I'm pretty sure it should have been done.

Hello everyone! Thanks for all the quick replies. That is what I was thinking uphillshunter that they should have checked them out. I just about believe that the leak out of the cam plugs might have began right after the valve cover gasket replacement.

Over 50% of the time, when people think their valve covers are leaking... it's actually the cam plugs. The cam plugs may have been what was leaking on your truck in the first place.

Also, the more I think about it... I'm also getting closer to 100% sure replacing the cam plugs (or at the very least re-sealing them) would be in the Toyota recommended procedure for replacing the valve cover gaskets. When you pull the valve covers off, it is a near 100% certainty you will disturb/dislodge the cam plugs... and you will with out doubt, break the seal on the upper portion of the cam plugs.

There is no way to properly replace the valve covers without addressing the cam plugs.

Welcome, welcome. Rest assured, anything rubber revealed by removing the valve cover should be inspected and seated properly. That's maintenance 101. I just checked the manual and for Cylinder Head Assembly tasks (which you have to enter for the gasket replacements, it says (for the camshaft housing plugs),

"(a) Remove any old packing (FIPG) material.

    (b) Apply seal packing to the bearing cap as shown.

    Seal packing:

    Part No. 08826-00080 or equivalent

    (c) Place a new housing plug in position on the cylinder

head, facing the cup side inward.

    (d) Install the camshaft bearing cap with the 2 bolts. •

    Torque: 16 N,m (160 kgf-cm, 12 ft•lbf)

    (e) Install the cylinder head rear plate, ground strap with

    the bolt and nut.

    Torque: 8 N,m (80 kgf-cm, 71 in.-lbf)"

Any time I disturb a formed in place gasket, I remove and replace that material.

    Hope this helps.

I just wanted to let everyone who responded and helped with information that I am actually going to get half of the cost of the rear cam plugs refunded. Thanks to all your information!
