I use the MAPP gas torch to heat up stuck bolts. Not sure what else it would be for...

Pre heating thicker pieces of metal before you weld it.

Neat idea, never thought to try that. About the thickest I weld is 1/4", and that's only for crossmembers, and I MP them. My welder is rated for 3/16" single-pass, IIRC.

This was the welder I bought - https://topwelders.com/lincoln-weld-pak-3200hd-reviews/. Apparently it has been discontinued now. I also have an AC225 (tombstone) that I can use for welding anything I will ever need to, as well as carbon-arc gouging (which I will never do).

EDIT: Correction, it's rated for up to 5/16" with fluxcore wire. I use it dualshield, and if I do my part, I haven't had a single problem.

EDIT THE DOS: OK, that site is pretty comical to refer to as a welding review source. It reads like someone let their 8 year old play with Wordpress. -shrug- hey, it's a dude named Beth..

Fender tubing hackery 2.0 starts this week since it's supposed to get somewhat nice out. Stay tuned for me setting the interior of my truck on fire a few times.

Also I'm starting an occupational health and safety consulting business (contracted safety dick) and im stuck on finding a name, so if anyone has any ideas post up. My initials are out as a major automotive brand has those plastered all over their vehicles and they make total shit (NOT TRD).

    Stuff. Also things.
 on the tubbing! Doing it once sucks all the balls, so I’m sure doing it again is even better. I still remember doing mine and being on firewatch while my buddy welded and cussed the thin fucking sheet metal...

ME: “Is that smoke right there from the welder? Or is that on fire? Yep. IT’S ON FIRE.”

And my vote is for something suitably douchey-sounding like ‘CSD Solutions’ for the name and then never explain what that stands for.

Only you and TW will ever know.

    Lol at CSD solutions!!

The good, and well bad part is my drivers side I mutilated it with a sledge hammer so I have to just cut all the fender well out. On the pax side the plate is like tacked in there in a few places and glued in with seam sealer, there should be some nice toxic fumes coming off this project. Total hack job that I slapped together 18hrs before leaving on a multistate wheeling trip. Will be nice to attempt to fix it the right way.

Starting your own business is exciting! I would probably pick something generic, like Occupational Safety Experts, it never hurts to have your field in the name, and probably helps make marketing and search engine optimization easier, but I’m no expert.

Yea it's hard working with boring terms like safety and consulting.

Exciting indeed, ton of work and I haven't even started finding clients yet. Need to get all the legal stuff sorted out before I start any work.

It's the welding part that I'm not looking forward to!

I stared at it for another hour or so and I THINK I now have a plan of attack, probably will be hack as hell

Digging since you mentioned it. How were you able to tell water pump wear? You didn't pull it off did you? Did you put on a new fan clutch at the same time? I plan on doing both. I hear a slight intermittent grinding at idle, it makes me think it's this.

I just went off the weep hole for the water pump. I put on a new fan clutch the year before because it took a crap on me, however this is the perfect time to do it. I found out this was bad by wiggling it and noticed a bunch of rusty dust coming out from around it.

 Yeah I want to do both at the same time. I did the timing belt/waterpump at around 200k, it's only at 245k right now.

I'm probibly due for a water pump/new timing belt in the next few years. My belt still looked good, I have a feeling the water pump will fail before then with how little miles the truck sees now. Fixing this bracket fixed my grinding noise at idle.

Did you need a special tool to torque the nuts to hold the fan clutch? Or torque it when belts are back on?

Nope. It's only small nuts that hold the fan clutch on. I tightened one nut down, then held it with a wrench while I did the others. Did a final check once the belts were on.

Torque it with the belts on and then something wedged in the pulley groove and belt like a pry bar, so that when it starts to spin it stops. But dont put anything bigger than the groove otherwise you'll run the rask of cracking the wall for the groove.
